Why aren't we calling the Capitol attack an act of treason?

There has been little public discussion of the term as the framework for understanding what happened on 6 January, experts sayDuring Donald Trump’s presidency, UC Davis law professor Carlton Larson spent a lot of time on the phone telling journalists: “It’s not treason.”Trump’s behavior towards Russia: not treason. All the FBI investigations Trump labeled as treason: also not treason. Then came the 6 January attack on the Capitol by hundreds of Trump supporters. That was treason according to the...

UC Targeted In Nationwide Cyber Attack; People Urged To Beware Of Threatening Emails

DAVIS (CBS13) — The University of California is warning its workers and students about a national cybersecurity attack targeting one of their systems. Officials reported on Wednesday that they had learned about the attack and reported it to federal law enforcement. It appears the cyberattack is focused on a secure file transfer system through the Accellion vendor. No other UC systems or networks were affected by the attack, officials say. Exactly how many people’s information may have been compr...

As Hopes For ‘Miracle March’ Evaporate, California Appears Set For Another Drought

DAVIS (AP/CBS13) — California’s hopes for a “Miracle March” of rain and snow did not materialize – and a dousing of April showers may as well be a mirage at this point. The state appears in the midst of another drought only a few years after a punishing 5-year dry spell dried up rural wells, killed endangered salmon, idled farm fields and helped fuel the most deadly and destructive wildfires in modern state history. “We’re looking at the second dry year in a row. In California that pretty much m...

Big West: UC Irvine baseball sits atop standings after first weekend

When a baseball team is off to a good start, there is an occasional surprise player or two contributing. In the case of UC Irvine, that would be pitcher Michael Frias and outfielder Luke Spillane. Frias is 3-0 with an ERA of 1.69 in five appearances – two of them starts – in 21-1/3 innings. In the 2020 season shortened by the coronavirus pandemic, he was 0-1 with an ERA of 1.35, but that was over just 6-2/3 innings pitched. The season before, in 2019, he went 1-1 with a 6.04 ERA in 14 appearance...

Animal model opens way to test Alzheimer's disease therapies

Our knowledge of Alzheimer's disease has grown rapidly in the past few decades but it has proven difficult to translate fundamental discoveries about the disease into new treatments. Now researchers at the California National Primate Research Center at UC Davis have developed a model of the early stages of Alzheimer's disease in rhesus macaques. The macaque model could allow better testing of new treatments.

Alexander: UC Irvine worn down by UC Santa Barbara in Big West final

Usually, the UC Irvine men’s basketball team wears people down. On Saturday night in Las Vegas, the Anteaters were on the other end of that process, and maybe it says something about this strangest of seasons. Or maybe it’s just one of those years. Russell Turner’s 2020-21 team is really young, and it ran into a UC Santa Barbara team with a senior leader who was not only the Big West Conference Player of the Year – and conference tournament MVP – but a young man with a long memory. JaQuori McLau...

Alexander: UC Davis women shrug off a 2-month break, cut down nets

UC Davis has become the Big West Conference’s women’s basketball behemoth, to the point that even two months of inactivity couldn’t slow the Aggies down. Davis is going to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments – sort of – after a 61-42 victory over UC Irvine in Saturday evening’s conference tournament final at the Mandalay Bay resort in Las Vegas. The Aggies, who outscored UCI 21-8 in the fourth quarter to break open a reasonably close game, visited the NCAAs in 2019 after winning the Big West Tournamen...

UC Riverside closes out Hawaii to reach Big West semifinals

If the UC Riverside men’s basketball team felt any nervousness going into its Big West Tournament quarterfinal game in Las Vegas, it certainly didn’t show on the court. The Highlanders played a poised and complete game in a 62-52 victory over Hawaii late Thursday night at Mandalay Bay to advance to the semifinals for the first time in more than a decade. Sixth-seeded Hawaii drew even at 49-49 with 6:42 left, but third-seeded UCR suffocated the Hawaii offense down the stretch, outscoring them 13-...
