Ex-Kremlin aide says Ukraine will never reclaim rebel east

A former senior aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that Ukraine will never be able to regain control over the separatist-controlled east. Vladislav Surkov, who lost his job as Putin's adviser on Ukraine earlier this month, said in remarks published Wednesday that he stepped down because of a shift in the Kremlin course on the Ukrainian conflict. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has made settling the conflict in eastern Ukraine his top priority.

Trump Claims Purging Officials Who Are ‘Disloyal’ To Him Is Good For America

President Donald Trump wants America to know that his plans to remove government officials deemed insufficiently loyal to him is actually for the country’s own good. When a reporter asked Trump about the purge during a press conference in New Delhi, India, on Tuesday, the President initially downplayed the number of people he felt deserved to be kicked out. “I don’t think it’s a big problem,” Trump said. “I don’t think it’s very many people.” He brought up the “very sad situation” with the “f...

WTO Panel Sets Threshold Test for the National Security Exception

In April 2015, we posted the first of a pair of articles on the “national security exception”: an important and controversial part of WTO agreements and other trade agreements including NAFTA and the new CUSMA. In these articles, we explored whether it was a necessary “safety valve” or the “ultimate threat” to the rule of law in the context of international trade. The issue was put in an urgent perspective in March 2018 when the U.S. Administration announced section 232 tariffs on steel and alum...

Secretary of State Pompeo appeared to coordinate with Giuliani on Ukraine, new documents show

A trove of documents released on Friday by the State Department to American Oversight make clear that Rudy Giuliani — who was acting as Trump’s personal attorney — pressed American diplomats to consider the information he’d unearthed in Kyiv about corruption. Though the documents released amount to fewer than a dozen pages of emails, they nevertheless show aides to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo unambiguously receptive to Giuliani’s overtures.

Dueling Narratives Emerge From Muddied Account of Russia's 2020 Interference

As accusations swirled Sunday about Russia's efforts to interfere with the 2020 election, President Donald Trump's national security adviser and former Vice President Joe Biden could not agree on what Moscow is, or is not, doing.Their disagreement came as intelligence officials disputed reports that emerged last week about a briefing of the House Intelligence Committee. The officials now maintain that the House members either misheard or misinterpreted a key part of the briefing and that...

Putin Sent Her Activist Boyfriend to the Arctic Circle. Now She Wants to Go, Too.

MOSCOW—Few people are familiar with Novaya Zemlya, a very obscure archipelago above the Arctic Circle that is controlled by Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), the successor to the infamous Soviet spy agency, the KGB. Even fewer people hope to travel to those thinly populated and thoroughly militarized islands, where the Russian army tests its Arctic missile systems, and where polar bears suffering the effects of climate change dig through garbage pits at impoverished settlements. Alexei Na...

Word of the week: Boogaloo

Why is this man wearing an aloha shirt—in Nebraska, in February—while toting a big ol’ weapon inside a government building? And what does all of that have to do with the word of the week, boogaloo? Brett Hendrix of Omaha with an AR-15 in the #Nebraska Capitol. Hendrix said he brought the gun to demonstrate the right to keep and bear arms. He opposes a gun bill that will be heard this afternoon in the #NELeg Judiciary Committee, viewable here: https://t.co/3k43sJrjfC pic.twitter.com/834lwqOK5Z...

President Trump appeared to suggest in a Sunday afternoon tweet that Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) could face consequences over reports of  a classified intelligence briefing earlier this month warning House lawmakers of Russian interference in the 2020 presidential election. Trump’s National Security Adviser Conveniently Forgets His Boss’ Ties to Russia

President Trump’s national security adviser has expressed bewilderment at the idea of Russia wanting to boost Trump in the 2020 election—apparently forgetting entirely about the Kremlin’s effort to sway the vote in 2016 and the president’s penchant for echoing Russian propaganda. Instead, he dredged up a decades-old trip that Bernie Sanders took to Moscow.“Well, there are these reports that they want Bernie Sanders to get elected president,” Robert O’Brien told ABC News’ This Week, according to ...

Weekly Roundup, Friday 21 February 2020

By all accounts, the Airbus A220 is a lovely plane, well liked by airlines and passengers alike. How ironic that this great airplane almost completely destroyed its developer – Bombardier. See story below. Good morningThe Covid-19 virus (it now has a name) has been enormously on my mind the last several weeks, and for very direct and personally impactful reasons.  To help clarify my thinking, I wrote a detailed and careful analysis of the present situation and the possible unfolding future, an...
