A Belikin With Mr. Lincoln Westby

The alarm clock on my iPhone went off at 4:00 a.m. and I tilted the driver's seat forward, stretched and gathered up a backpack, duffel and three fly rods bundled together to carry on the flight from Atlanta to Belize City.  I had arrived at the airport after midnight and had gotten a few hours of somewhat restful sleep parked in the darkest corner that I could find in the airport parking lot with the noise of jet planes taking off and touching down while I snoozed.Six hours and three flights la...

At 75

My dad turns 75 today. He’s my longest-time fishing companion. As a very small boy we’d fish Hall Creek near his childhood home in Corning. Later we’d fish the Klamath River together for steelhead. We plugged away at our local Upper Sacramento River a bit, but didn’t really fish it until I hit about 21. We fished the Lower Sacramento for shad on Memorial Day weekend every year of my childhood (minus flood years) and the Klamath for half-pounders every Labor Day weekend (minus one year due to fir...

How the media reports mass shootings may influence future ones

Photo: Ryan via Flickr As the U.S. struggles to process and grieve yet another mass shooting — this one unique in targeting a minority group (the Latino community) of a minority group (the LGBTQ community) — the media is struggling to cover the massacre responsibly and sensitively without letting the coverage feel like a recycle of every previous shooting. And there is at least one way they appear to be succeeding: giving less attention to the killer than to the victims. Though research is li...

Marketing Mass Slaughter

After the slaughter of 20 children and six adults in Newtown Connecticut, some expected the National Rifle Association to relent, just a little, to offer some kind of rationale compromise that might help in some small way to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people. At the very least, we thought they would stay quiet. Not a chance. He waited about a week but then gun-salesman in chief Wayne LaPierre came out swinging, calling on his followers to do what George W. Bush asked of the America...

Clinton Should Use Her VP Pick to Put Gun Violence Front and Center

So Hillary's beginning to look around for a VP and, not without good reason, the names of some other women have come into view, the most prominent of course being Liz Warren. I say 'of course' because this trial balloon is probably being floated by the folks who want to make sure that Bernie's most ardent supporters don't bolt and run during the Fall election. Like where are they going to go? To Ralph Nader? Anyway, I think with all due respect to the gender warriors (said positively, btw) that ...

The cranes have been placed and draped on top of a coat rack in the First Christian Church's sanctuary. At Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012. Is the term “inspiring bank” an oxymoron?

It’s interesting, where people find inspiration. For some business owners, it’s the pages of Forbes or biographies of big-name entrepreneurs. For Monet, it was the garden. For me it’s the bookstore, the ski slopes, or the trails. The bank is definitely not on my list. Banks are not known for their inspiring environments or groundbreaking business practices. In fact, the entire banking industry has a huge cloud hanging over its head, every since the mortgage banking debacle of 2009. The most exc...
