Search for Coronavirus Vaccine Becomes a Global Competition

A global arms race for a coronavirus vaccine is underway. The New York Times reports: In the three months since the virus began its deadly spread, China, Europe and the United States have all set off at a sprint to become the first to produce a vaccine. But while there is cooperation on many levels -- including among companies that are ordinarily fierce competitors -- hanging over the effort is the shadow of a nationalistic approach that could give the winner the chance to favor its own populati...

Buy Low… Lower… Lower! Larry Kudlow Keeps Up The Investment Advice

As the market dips ever lower, the White House’s top economic authority offers the same advice: Buy low! Former CNBC pundit Larry Kudlow kept up that advice on Monday as markets continued to plunge all around him. “To me, when you see these big dips, these big drops, they’re buying opportunities if you’re a long-term investor,” he told reporters from the White House driveway, according to a pool report. During the same press gaggle, he paraphrased, purposefully or not, the late Sen. John McCa...

China’s Space Force Is Way Ahead of Trump’s

HONG KONG—Nearly a year and a half after Donald J. Trump ordered the Pentagon to establish the U.S. Space Force—a whole new sixth branch of the American armed forces—he signed the 2020 National Defense Authorization Act on Dec. 20. At least on paper, the U.S. Space Force is now a reality. But the United States is late to this game. The Russians have been organizing and reorganizing space force variants since the 1990s. And more importantly, the Chinese Communist Party’s People’s Liberation Army ...

How Cultural Differences Shape Your Gratitude

If you’re trying to become happier, you’ve probably heard the advice to practice gratitude. “Gratitude is literally one of the few things that can measurably change people’s lives,” writes pioneering researcher Robert Emmons in his book Thanks! His studies suggest that gratitude can improve our health and relationships—making it one of the most well-studied and effective ways to increase our well-being in life. But there’s a problem with prescribing gratitude to everyone: Most of what we know ...

Russia and China Could Do This to Win a War Against America

The peaceful use of space will be increasingly threatened not only by active conflict but also accidents, ASATs and miscalculations that spiral out of control. As the competition among great powers propels more technological breakthroughs in space, it also drives the production of space debris, which amplifies the risk that important satellites could be disabled — either intentionally or accidentally.Another country, another test, yet more debris floating through the crowded realm of near-orbit ...

Plastic polluter: Brazil recycles 'almost nothing'

Standing among sacks of used supermarket shopping bags, soft drink bottles and detergent containers, Evelin Marcele is scornful of Brazil's efforts to recycle plastic waste. "Almost nothing," said the 40-year-old director of CoopFuturo, a sorting center for recyclable material in Rio de Janeiro, where plastic makes up 60 percent of the roughly 120 tonnes of garbage delivered to the facility every month. Brazil is the fourth biggest producer of plastic rubbish in the world, beaten only by the U...
