NCAA allows schools to grant extra year of eligibility to spring athletes

College athletes whose seasons were suddenly cut short by the COVID-19 outbreak can get a mulligan. The NCAA announced on Monday that its Division I Council voted to allow schools to grant an extra year of eligibility to spring student-athletes, whose seasons ended this month when the NCAA canceled all remaining championships for winter and spring sports due to the pandemic. Winter sports such as basketball and hockey were not included in the NCAA’s extension of an extra year because many athlet...

USC added its third graduate transfer in the past week on Monday, as former Wofford power forward Chevez Goodwin committed to the Trojans with an announcement on Twitter. Goodwin, a 6-foot-9 forward from South Carolina, averaged 11.9 points and 6.2 rebounds per game as a junior. He shot 64 percent from the floor and blocked 1.1 shots per g...

After injury, Jack Jablonski making career moves with LA Kings

In a season in which the Kings didn’t acquire many big names, their biggest addition may well have been away from the ice when they signed Jack Jablonski to their media staff. A former 50-goal scorer at the Bantam level, today he provides leadership, inspiration and an insatiable thirst for hockey knowledge from his motorized wheelchair. Jablonski, 24, was once a promising high-school player whose coaches believed he could be a Division I forward. In 2011, his life was changed literally in an in...

Whicker: Riverside City College, Santiago Canyon remember shock of stoppage time

Where were you when the music stopped? Phil Mathews and the Riverside City College men’s basketball team were just passing Magic Mountain, on the way to Lemoore for the state tournament. “I’d had a bad feeling,” he said. “They said they were going to play without fans. I said, OK, we can do that. Then when the NBA called everything off, I said, that’s it.” The call came, and Mathews told the bus driver to pull over, and he turned to his team and explained that a surprising 21-9 season would be s...

HBO documentary on the basketball scandal isn’t a bad look for Arizona, but it’s a bad, bad sound

It seems we have a potential twist in the ongoing saga of Sean Miller/Arizona basketball/University of Arizona/Tucson metropolitan area vs. the FBI/NCAA/college basketball fans and media/free world. And it comes from an unlikely source: Could HBO have done what a multi-year FBI investigation, complete with wiretaps and undercover agents, and two federal corruption trials could not do? Could a two-hour documentary scheduled to air on March 31 mean the end of Miller’s tenure at Arizona? The Hotlin...

With coronavirus-prompted distance learning, teens cope with social isolation, new stressors

A cluster of friends high-fived and chatted at the entrance to Reseda Charter High on Wednesday morning, standing rather close to one another at a time when public health officials caution against breaching 6 feet with anyone outside your household. They stood in a line that snaked around the block to pick up school-issued laptops for remote instruction. It’s been nearly two weeks since schools in Southern California and across the nation shuttered, hoping to hamper spread of the coronavirus pan...

How a USC football coach is managing his 5 kids during the coronavirus pandemic

Offenses in football learn it’s best to pick on the easy target. Children know this instinctively, too. So members of the pack of five will weave through the unpacked boxes in the new home, TV remote in hand, movie request in mind, until they find their dad. “They kinda know I’m a sucker,” USC defensive line coach Vic So’oto says. “I have to be the bad guy and make them get back to work.” This is the new reality for the So’otos and other families across the country as they adjust to homeschoolin...

From his Rocky Mountain training base, triathlete Matt McElroy could see what was ahead for him and thousands of Olympic athletes, a decision that loomed at first in the distance and then grew ever closer, more inevitable with each day, with each death. The Olympic Games would not take place in Tokyo this summer because of the COVID-19 pandemic. “We kind of saw this coming from like two weeks ago,” McElroy said. “I was just preparing for it based on the increased number of deaths.” Monday, McElr...

The “Feynman Technique” for Studying Effectively: An Animated Primer

After winning the Nobel Prize, physicist Max Planck "went around Germany giving the same standard lecture on the new quantum mechanics. Over time, his chauffeur memorized the lecture and said, 'Would you mind, Professor Planck, because it’s so boring to stay in our routine, if I gave the lecture in Munich and you just sat in front wearing my chauffeur’s hat?' Planck said, 'Why not?' And the chauffeur got up and gave this long lecture on quantum mechanics. After which a physics profe...

How USC football is continuing some workouts amid coronavirus quarantine

This wasn’t exactly the spring that USC football had in mind. The Trojans had just one spring practice, the beginning of implementing a new defense and a new physicality, before concerns about the spread of COVID-19 led to USC and the Pac-12 to suspend all team activities, including football practices, as part of social distancing. Now, most of the team has gone home for spring and is not allowed back on USC’s campus. So the Trojans have had to get creative with how they work out in quarantine. ...

Jesse Eisenberg plays Marcel Marceau in ‘Resistance’ and home buyer in ‘Vivarium’

When Jesse Eisenberg calls to talk about his two new movies, “Resistance” and “Vivarium,” he laughs and is quick to agree that the two films would make for a truly bizarre double feature. In “Vivarium,” he plays Tom opposite Imogen Poots as his girlfriend Gemma, a young couple looking to buy a first home wh...

Expected coronavirus surge prompts hospitals, state to scramble

Furiously gearing up for an unknown multitude of COVID-19 patients, California has not only secured a 1,000-bed Navy medical ship for the Los Angeles port but is preparing to lease at least two shuttered hospitals, host MASH-style popup care units, secure hotel rooms, recruit health workers from retirement and bring in more medical help from less-stricken states. Some hospitals have already set up tents in their parking lots, not only to brace for the surge of cases expected to overwhelm their c...

Below the Radar: The Kimberly Vaughan Firearm Safe Storage Act

IDENTILOCK Firearm Trigger Lock United States – -(AmmoLand.com)- Sometimes, when legislation is targeting your Second Amendment rights, it doesn’t necessarily come in the form of a ban or licensing and registration. Sometimes, the worst infringements are those that literally make it impossible for people to exercise their Second Amendment rights in one way or another without risking arrest (and worse). It could be anything from closing land used for hunting. It could be a noise ordinance that...

Coronavirus means a new way of daily living

The message from state officials is clear: Stay home, only leave for essentials and keep 6 feet away from others to stop the spread of the coronavirus. But some Southern Californians are wondering about the practicalities. Is it safe to wait in line with others to enter a grocery store? Is it best to cross the street if a neighbor is also out for a walk? Local public health officials said to use common sense while practicing social distancing. “You cut the spread by putting people away from situ...

Coronavirus cut USC track season short on eve of NCAA indoor championships

The USC track team was going about its final practice in Albuquerque last Thursday as it prepared for the indoor national championships. That’s when the world shifted under their feet. How Leaders Overcome Adversity

We believe that great leaders possess four essential skills, and...these happen to be the same skills that allow a person to find meaning in what could be a debilitating experience. First is the ability to engage others in shared meaning... Second is a distinctive and compelling voice... Third is a sense of integrity (including a strong set of values)... But by far the most critical skill of the four is what we call "adaptive capacity..." It’s composed of two primary qualities: the ability ...

Warning Take Action Call Protest United States – -(AmmoLand.com)- One thing Second Amendment supporters should recognize is that a piece of legislation doesn’t need to grab big headlines to be a sweeping assault on our rights.
