Cleveland RTX ZipCore: A New Old-Fashioned Wedge

When you think Cleveland wedges, you think classic. You  think consistent. And you think Zip – as in Zip Grooves. Well, there’s a fresh Zip in town as today Cleveland Golf unveils its new RTX ZipCore  wedge.    There’s only so much technology that can be added to a blade-style wedge and  still keep  it a blade-style wedge.  While   ZipCore maintains much of Cleveland’s RTX DNA, there’s enough innovation here to warrant a closer look.   With apologies to Brenda Lee, you can cons...

AP sources: NBC gets US Open as Fox gets out of contract

The U.S. Open is returning to NBC starting this year at Winged Foot after Fox Sports has asked to end its 12-year contract with the USGA, multiple people told The Associated Press on Sunday night. The U.S. Open, originally scheduled to be played last week, was postponed to Sept. 17-20 at Winged Foot in New York when the COVID-19 pandemic shut down golf for three months. NBC televised the U.S. Open from 1995 through 2014.

Mickelson added to field in a US Open without qualifying

The USGA is leaning a little more on the world ranking and a lot more on tournament results over the next two months to fill the 144-man field for a U.S. Open that will be without open qualifying for the first time in nearly a century. The exemption categories announced Thursday include a spot for Phil Mickelson. A runner-up six times in the only major Lefty hasn't won, the most devastating was in 2006 at Winged Foot, just north of New York City, where the U.S. Open is set to return Sept....

Golf: Six-times runner-up Mickelson gets exemption into U.S. Open

Mickelson, a runner-up at the U.S. Open a record six times, was in danger of missing the Sept. 17-20 tournament at Winged Foot in Mamaroneck, New York but made it into the field as the COVID-19 outbreak led to a change in the exemption categories. Among the changes announced by the USGA, which eliminated all qualifying for the event, were to include the top 70 players in the world rankings as of March 15 - when the PGA Tour went into a three-month a COVID-19 hiatus - instead of the usual 60.

Penfold Golf Balls: Another Direct-To-Consumer Brand?

Golf brands come and golf brands go. That’s simply the way of the world. There was a time when Penfold Golf was the name in golf balls in Europe. That time, however, is long gone. So, it’s fair to ask why is an English squash pro living in Philly trying to bring the brand back in North America? It’s also fair to ask if we really need another Direct-to-Consumer golf ball brand. Penfold’s history is a fascinating look at the way things used to be. The new Penfold Golf is an interesting look at the...

TaylorMade SIM Tour and Callaway Mavrik Sub Zero LS Triple Diamond Drivers

Filed under probably not coming to a retail store near you, TaylorMade and Callaway, the market leaders in the driver category both have new models on the USGA’s Conforming Clubs list this week. As per usual, the USGA doesn’t provide the measure of specificity we’d like, and so while we wait to hear back from both companies, all we can do is speculate. TaylorMade SIM Tour Missing among a 3-deep sea of SIMs at retail this season was a SIM Tour. For the past several generations of drivers, Tay...

SQAIRZ Golf Shoes – The New Shape of Innovation?

Every once in a while, you see something that makes your head snap to one side and say, “What the hell…?” SQAIRZ golf shoes are one such something. We first saw SQAIRZ golf shoes in January at the PGA Merchandise Show Demo Day. At first glance, my occipital lobe was whispering “cross-country ski boot.” Chris Nickel, however, blurted out what my frontal, parietal and temporal lobes were all thinking. “What the f**k are those?” Those happen to be what may be the most unique – and quite possibly mo...

Colin Montgomerie: It is time to introduce a new tournament ball to counter Bryson DeChambeau's strength

Bryson DeChambeau’s outrageous power show at the PGA Tour’s comeback event has convinced Colin Montgomerie of the urgent necessity for the governing bodies to introduce a tournament ball. Like everyone who watched the opening rounds of the Charles Schwab Challenge, Montgomerie was stunned by the transformation of the 26-year-old American. In the Tour’s three-month hiatus, DeChambeau added so much bulk he has gone from a medium in shirts to an extra-large. And, if anything, the distance which the...

Wilson WLabs Driver Hits USGA Conforming List

COVID-19 may have stalled this spring’s retail business, but OEM R&D teams are still hard at work. A new Wilson driver hit the USGA Conforming List this week, with the code name WLabs. All signs indicate this driver could fill a glaring hole in Wilson’s lineup. “We’ve been working to get drivers in play with our Tour players,” Wilson Golf Club Innovation Manager Jon Pergande tells MyGolfSpy. “We’re doing some testing with our guys with that club, and getting it on the USGA website means if they ...

Tiger Woods' handicap index history is as amazing as you'd imagine—but his peak year might surprise you

It's been a long time since Tiger Woods had an official USGA handicap index. Statistician Lou Stagner, one of the minds behind DECADE Golf, went through all of Tiger's scores as a pro. Using course rating and slope for each course, he computed a differential for each round and kept a running tally of what Tiger's index would have been at the time (Keep in mind that a golfer's index only takes into account his most recent 20 scores).

MyGolfSpy Ball Lab – A Different Kind of Golf Ball Test

You’re probably familiar with our annual Most Wanted tests and Buyer’s Guides. Their purpose is to help golfers identify the best products for their game. While the goal remains the same, today we’re announcing a different kind of testing program. It’s called MyGolfSpy Ball Lab. I haven’t been this excited about an initiative since we committed to large-scale, data-driven golf club testing nearly a decade ago. In some respects, Ball Lab is even more exciting because we’re seeking to uncover the ...
