The best dash cams you can buy

The   Insider Picks   team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase. A reliable dashboard camera can prove fault after a car accident, capture amazing footage of your road trip, or help keep an inexperienced young driver responsible out there on the roads. The Vantrue N2 Pro Dual Dash Cam is our top pick because its high-definition camera captures crystal clear footage day and night, while its cab...

Stranded in Vava’u While I Slowly Lost My Mind

I feel awful. As I write this, I’m in Vava’u, Tonga, and I feel exhausted and malnourished and stressed and irritable and depressed. I can’t stop grinding my teeth. Occasionally, I burst into hysterical peals of laughter until I feel as though I’m deteriorating into madness. All I want to do — no, all I need to do — is get off this goddamn island. But this is the South Pacific and it’s not as simple as that. What on earth went wrong? Quite. What did go wrong? In my last post, I’d f...

Ha’apai: My South Pacific Island Paradise

I’ve got quite a few of these going now. There’s Koh Yao Noi (my Thai island paradise), Otres Beach (my Cambodian beach paradise), Tofo (my Mozambican beach paradise), and now I’m throwing Ha’apai, Tonga into the mix, because after seven years of travel, I think it’s the prettiest place I’ve ever been. Yeah, I’m fairly certain I’ve found paradise. If you’ve been following along with my Tonga updates, you’ll already know I can’t get enough of Ha’apai. I’ve been talking about it non-stop...

The Cost of Travel in Tonga

Tonga is a country you can either explore on a tight budget or while splurging on some relatively inexpensive luxury. It’s a place where $100 a night will get you sunbathing on the most beautiful beach you’ll ever experience and amazingly, have it all to yourself. It’s where you can get by on $15 a day through staying in hostels, ferrying your way around the islands, and eating from supermarkets. It’s where you can spend $250 a night and stay in paradise — on an island so incredible it’s use...

Exploring ‘Eua: Tonga’s Forgotten Island

My flight from Tongatapu to ‘Eua was the longest of my life. Which is funny, because it was six minutes in duration. Okay, so it only felt like the longest flight of my life. In reality, it’s one of the shortest you can experience. While Real Tonga claims it as the world’s shortest flight, there’s several other that rank higher up the list. Most notably, the flight from Westray to Papa Westray in Scotland takes just 53 seconds to fly a distance of 1.7 miles. But back to Tonga. I wasn’t entirely ...

What’s it Like to Travel in Tonga?

Tonga is one of my favourite countries in the world. I can’t stop talking about how incredible it is. It’s full of some of the loveliest people on the planet, has some of the best beaches I’ve ever stepped foot on, has dozens of islands to explore, and can be seen at an affordable price. It’s even one of only two places in the world where you can jump in the water and swim with humpback whales. I’m on a mission to convince everybody to go to Tonga and that includes you, so let’s get started with...

Tech review: VAVA’s speaker brings you the music without any wires

January 2018: Travel Summary and Statistics

I’m now three months into this current stint of long-term travel and I’m delighted to announce it’s going better than I had even dared to imagine. January, in particular, was one of the best months I’ve ever had on the road! I’m enjoying the spontaneity full-time travel is bringing to my life, and I’m grateful to have the freedom to change up my life, whether it’s altering my travel plans to head somewhere on a whim or mixing things up if something isn’t going well. The decisions to prioritise s...

December 2017: Travel Summary and Statistics

Mālō e lelei from Vava’u, Tonga! One thing I’ve learned from my time in this country so far? It’s is a destination in which to disconnect! With unusable and/or expensive Wi-Fi ($25 for 500 mb!) and rarely more than an 2G connection on my phone, posting on Never Ending Footsteps has had to take a backseat until I get myself back to better connected places — most likely not until mid-freaking-February! Yes, I’m struggling to deal with this. The positive to my unexpected disconnection for you guys...

Photos: Lauren Ruth Ward at the Bootleg Theater

[See image gallery at buzzbands.la] Lauren Ruth Ward has spend the better part of a year and half paying her dues around L.A., supporting the scene that supported her, and playing just about every venue and every free gig she could round up her fearsome foursome of bandmates for. So Friday night’s show at the Bootleg Theater was in large part a friends and “scene family” affair. It was sold out because she’s made so many of them. Ostensibly an album release affair for her full-length debut “Wel...

Bassheads will love Vava’s $26 wired ‘gaming’ earphones

Even though we’ve had Bluetooth wireless technology for years now, I’m still a sucker for wired earphones simply because there’s no battery to worry about charging up. What’s more, most of my wired sets sound far and away better than my wireless earphones. That’s why I was happy to try out Vava’s new ‘gaming’ earphones. The Fremont-based company, which also makes speakers and other products, is targeting gamers who want surround sound but without the trouble of carrying around a large set of ove...

These $25 headphones with 3D surround sound are perfect for playing games and watching movies

Even though the future is wireless, it's still handy to keep a pair of wired headphones on you at all times. And for that, I think I've found a new favorite: the Moov 14 in-ear headphones from Vava, which only cost $25. I use in-ear headphones for two things, mainly: to hear music and notifications coming from my laptop when I'm working throughout the day, and to plug into my PlayStation 4 controller so I can play games or watch movies, particularly when my fiancée is asleep so as not to distur...

Vava’s $199 dashcam is sleek and feature-rich, but…

After racking up nearly $300,000 on Kickstarter, Vava’s newest product, Dash, is ready to hit the road. Well, sorta. I like reviewing cool new products, but a dashcam wouldn’t typically move the needle. After all, it’s a device that’s not-at-all sexy, and one we’re typically hoping we don’t have to use. Vava was different. Some smart features and a video of a dude in a bear suit backing into an SUV convinced me to give it a look. What is it? Vava is a 1080p dashcam with some interesting twists [...

VAVA’s new dash cam lets you video while you voom

I usually don’t like to post Kickstarters unless I’ve seen the product firsthand but I also love dash cams. What was I to do? Luckily Vava was able to supply a demo unit so I can report that this $99 dash cam is real, works, and could let you make some clever Russian-style road videos or record conditions before an accident. Most of the dash cams I’ve seen so far have been… Read More

VAVA Voom 20 Bluetooth speaker review

A few months ago I was given the opportunity to review the VAVA Voom Bluetooth speaker. While reviewing it, I found it was a nice speaker, but had a few issues that kept it from reaching greatness. VAVA recently released their newest speaker, the Voom 20. According to VAVA, the Voom 20 “seeks to redefine premium wireless speakers”. Let’s dive in and see if VAVA reached its goal. In the box Voom 20 Bluetooth speaker Micro-USB cable 3.5 mm audio cable User guide Travel pouch ...

With dual 8W drivers, two passive subwoofers, 10 hours of battery life and an IPX5 water rating, this speaker will go anywhere you want to bring it, be that the beach, your hotel room, or the kitchen of your AirBnB. Vava Voom Bluetooth speaker review

In my never-ending quest to find the perfect Bluetooth speaker, I’ve managed to collect several small, rugged speakers. While marching forth on my epic audio journey, I was offered the chance to review the Vava Voom Bluetooth speaker. According to Vava, the Voom is “[e]ngineered to produce high quality audio, [it] is infused with a timeless design that...

Cyclone Ula intensifies as it wends through the South Pacific

Severe Tropical Cylcone Ula has returned to category three strength, bringing winds of up to 120 kilometres per hour as it tracks slowly west south-westerly away from Fiji towards Vanuatu. The first cyclone of 2016 had weakened to a category one after hitting Tonga's northern islands, particularly Vava'u , as a category three system last Saturday.
