Pearl District is a New American culinary gem in Sherman Oaks

At one time, the large space at 14015 Ventura Blvd. in Sherman Oaks was home to a casual eatery called Café Cordiale. Then, it was taken over by the folks from the nearby Boneyard Bistro, and turned into a more elegant spot called SOCA. Which after a year and a half was replaced by a Mexican concept called Boneyard Cantina. Which you may have missed if you blinked; it didn’t last very long at all. Now, the space is a branch of the very popular Westlake Village New American called Pearl District....

Another Ross Dress for Less is planned for Ventura Boulevard in Encino

Ross Dress for Less may lack the sheen and shine of other large-scale retail stores like Nordstrom, Macy’s or Sears, but shoppers at the off-price discount emporium can find the same name brands for up to 70 percent lower prices. So is it any surprise that another store is slated for development on Ventura Boulevard in Encino, making it the tenth Ross in the San Fernando Valley area within two miles up the road from a store in Tarzana? At 21,249 square feet, developers hope to open the store on ...

25 years after the Northridge earthquake, what will it take to prepare for the next big one? A smaller one, experts say

Tucked in the back of a parking lot near Van Nuys Airport, Jeff Edelstein has run a survival equipment store for the last 30 years. And in that time, he’s learned a few things about being ready for a disaster. He’s noticed a familiar pattern: After big disasters, selling emergency kits is easy. As several large fires menaced Los Angeles and Ventura counties over the last two years — first the Thomas and Creek fires in late 2017 and the Woolsey fire that ended last November — sales picked up at h...

25 years after the Northridge earthquake, another one could hit ‘any time.’ Are we safer?

A quarter century has passed, but David Miller will never forget the sound. “It was like there was a freight train under my house,” he said, recalling the moment 25 years ago Thursday, Jan. 17, when the Earth’s plates suddenly slipped along a previously unknown fault 11 miles beneath his Prairie Street home in Northridge. Woodland Hills street becomes chanting ground for LA teachers strike supporters

Dozens of students, parents and teachers took to the streets in Woodland Hills Friday to show their support for Los Angeles teachers who are expected to go on strike Monday. Daneh Gallo, a fifth-grade teacher from Welby Way Elementary School, in West Hills, said she was not concerned about a pay raise but rather about her class size. “I had kids who were on a suicide watch and kids who were depressed,” she said, adding that with social media “the essence of our jobs has changed, but the district...
