Aliens, Ghosts, and Giant Fireflies: Solving the Mystery of the Brown Mountain Lights

Imagine you’re hiking the mountain at night. The beam of your cell phone flashlight guides the way. You’re looking for a clearing to set up camp when your phone dies, and so does your only source of comfort. In the darkness, you hold your hand out to steady yourself, but you can’t even see your arm outstretched in front of you. You hope to grab a nearby tree to reorient, but you’re too afraid of grabbing something else. It’s here where you see a light flash red in the trees some hundred yards...

The FBI Says Its Photo Analysis Is Scientific Evidence. Scientists Disagree.

The bureau’s image unit has linked defendants to crime photographs for decades using unproven techniques and baseless statistics. Studies have begun to raise doubts about the unit’s methods. At the FBI Laboratory in Quantico, Virginia, a team of about a half-dozen technicians analyzes pictures down to their pixels, trying to determine if the faces, hands, clothes or cars of suspects match images collected by investigators from cameras at crime scenes. The unit specializes in visual evidence...

Love Horoscope for the Week of January 14

You know how sometimes you will see someone on Facebook who has listed their relationship status as “complicated”? This should not come as a surprise, because most relationships (even good ones) get complicated every once in a while. Listing your relationship status as “complicated” can have a lot of meanings. It could be a desperate cry for attention. It could be an invitation to have someone new come into your life without finishing the current relationship first. It’s like a distress signal w...

6 Razors That Actually Work — According To Our Editors

Remember the first time you shaved? It probably went something like this: One day, your mom came home with an extra set of pink razors and offered you some kind words of guidance like, "Please be careful and take your time," or, in my case, "Scream if something goes wrong." After years of watching those comically ecstatic Venus razor commercials, you knew roughly what to do once you got in the shower, sliding that pink razor over your armpits full of stubble and your hairy legs. What was reveal...

Giant pattern discovered in the clouds of planet Venus

A Japanese research group has identified a giant streak structure among the clouds covering planet Venus based on observation from the spacecraft Akatsuki. The team also revealed the origins of this structure using large-scale climate simulations. The group was led by Project Assistant Professor Hiroki Kashimura (Kobe University, Graduate School of Science) and these findings were published on January 9, 2019 in Nature Communications.

Vintage Science Fiction Month: Podkayne of Mars

Vintage SF Month is hosted by the Little Red Reviewer. The objective: Read and discuss "older than I am" Science Fiction in the month of January. I've always enjoyed Science Fiction, but a little over a decade ago, I decided to make my casual enjoyment of the genre a little more formal by broadening my horizons and reading more important examples of the genre. One of the first things I did was read a bunch of Heinlein Juveniles (akin to what we'd probably call Young Adult these days). Robert A....

Highlights for Jan. 6-13, 2019

A true and honest plan Dates and times are given for U.S. Pacific Time zone. Click them to see the date and time where you are. Freedom from desire I have this theory that everything and everyone has someone who is designed to love them. Just look at the things that people collect: thimbles, matchbooks, refrigerator magnets. There are folks who love cars, quilts, cats, guitars, Fiesta ware, old vinyl albums, flamingos, mushrooms, and circus posters. I watched a great documentary about ...

Love Horoscope for the Week of January 7

This is one of those weeks that’s going to be a little hard to do justice within the context of a weekly horoscope. There is something much bigger brewing in the sky, and although it doesn’t come until the end of this forecast period, it’s big enough that I have to start with it. Although Jupiter square Neptune is not exact until Sunday, its influence is a major player throughout the entire month, and indeed even beyond. Jupiter is the natural ruler of your life philosophy, higher practical v...

Moon and Planets

Talking to spacecraft that are far from Earth isn’t easy. It takes powerful transmitters to beam signals to other worlds, and giant radio dishes to hear the replies. There’s also the matter of time. Radio signals travel at the speed of light — 670 million miles an hour. Even so, it takes minutes or hours for a signal to travel between Earth and a spacecraft at another planet. For some examples, consider three brilliant objects in tomorrow’s early morning sky: the Moon and the planets Venus and J...

Morning Lights

The solar system gets the new year off to a beautiful start tomorrow. The three brightest objects in the night sky will team up before and during dawn: the Moon and the planets Venus and Jupiter. Venus is the brilliant “morning star,” and it stands close to the lower left of the Moon. Jupiter stands well to the lower left of Venus, not far above the horizon at first light. Other than the fact that both of them are planets, Venus and Jupiter don’t have very much in common. Venus is a ball of rock...

Love Horoscope for the Week of December 31

Year-End Party Season ends this week, and this is a time of year when many people have literal or figurative hangovers they just want to sleep off. Emotionally, that describes the mood for the upcoming weekend pretty nicely. But before we get to that, there is still New Year’s Day to get through… and that comes with plenty of potential for action. On Monday, Mars enters Aries. This is usually considered to be a good placement for Mars, and overall as far as dating goes, it should serve to inc...

Nightmare draw for Venus and Azarenka in Auckland

Venus Williams and Victoria Azarenka have been drawn to face each other in a blockbuster first-round clash at the WTA ASB Classic, which starts in Auckland on Monday. The two former world number ones and tournament drawcards were also joined by Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki in the top quarter of the draw, meaning only one of the big-name trio can make the semi-finals. Williams, who won the Auckland title three years ago, may be heading into the twilight of her career at 38 but sa...
