Whicker: Rams hope new defensive boss Brandon Staley is a quick fixer

It’s not a souffle or a roast duck. It’s football. The prep time is overrated. When Brandon Staley was coaching at John Carroll, there was no spring practice. At Hutchinson Junior College at Kansas, players constantly rushed through the turnstile, none available for more than two years. “When I got hired by the Bears, Khalil Mack showed up seven days before the first regular-season game,” Staley said. “And that was one of his best games. People wonder about it, but the competition starts when ev...

New Chargers Chris Harris Jr., Bryan Bulaga are fans of team’s talent, versatility

Free-agent acquisitions Chris Harris Jr., Bryan Bulaga and Nick Vigil won’t get to adjust with their new Chargers teammates anytime soon, but they’ve been learning new roles at home. Harris has spent most of his time keeping his daughters entertained while in quarantine because of the coronavirus pandemic. They’re doing homework, arts and crafts and watching movies. “Just trying to find enough fun stuff,” Harris said Tuesday during an introductory conference call with reporters. Vigil and Bulaga...

Reports: DE Harris re-signs with Broncos

Defensive end Shelby Harris has agreed to a one-year deal to remain with the Denver Broncos, according to multiple reports Saturday. Harris, 28, was expected to move on in free agency, but the Denver Post reported that changed after the veteran met with coach Vic Fangio to discuss his role on the team. A seventh-round draft pick by Oakland in 2014, Harris spent two seasons with the Raiders.

John Elway: Feels good not having to worry about QB

Elway went on to say he didn't have any question Lock is their guy and that it “feels a little better coming here without having to worry about that position and knowing which direction you're going to go. He's got the 'it' factor, he's got the confidence to play the position,” Elway said, via Nicki Jhabvala of TheAthletic.com. Broncos head coach Vic Fangio dropped by PFT Live on Tuesday and said he thought Lock “improved tremendously” while he was out of action for...

Pat Shurmur, a Bears offensive coordinator target, expected to join Broncos

The Bears will have to look elsewhere as they search for their next offensive coordinator. Sunday, CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reported the Bears were attempting to hire former Giants head coach Pat Shurmur as offensive coordinator. However, Shurmur is reportedly joining Vic Fangio and the Broncos in the same position.

John Elway declares Drew Lock starting QB heading into 2020

For the first time since Super Bowl 50, John Elway heads into an offseason not looking to change his head coach, starting quarterback or locker room chemistry. Elway said Monday that rookie Drew Lock showed enough in his five-week audition to earn the nod as the Denver Broncos' starting QB heading into 2020. He also said he's a bigger fan than ever of head coach Vic Fangio and believes the Broncos, who went 7-5 after a winless September, have finally turned the corner despite missing o...

Broncos Beat Raiders 16-15 To Keep Rival From Playoffs

DENVER (AP) — Shelby Harris knocked down Derek Carr’s 2-point pass to Hunter Renfrow with 7 seconds left and the Denver Broncos put at end to the Raiders’ dim playoff hopes — and to Oakland’s run as an NFL city with a 16-15 win Sunday. The Raiders (7-9) nearly made the Broncos (7-9) pay dearly for Garett Bolles’ latest penalty, a personal foul that pushed Brandon McManus way back for a 57-yard field-goal attempt, which sailed wide left, giving Oakland the ball at its 45-yard line with 1:41 remai...

Vic Fangio: Drew Lock has shown he 'definitely could be The Guy' for Broncos

The Denver Broncos have seen rookie Drew Lock start their last four games. In that time, the Broncos have gone 3-1. While their season will end this Sunday, head coach Vic Fangio believes there's reason for optimism heading into 2020.

Fangio: Miller’s frustrations boiled over after latest loss

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Vic Fangio insists Von Miller’s perpetual optimism isn’t among the ruins as the losses pile up for the Denver Broncos. “He’s been a positive influence and a positive part of this team, and that will continue,” Fangio declared Monday, 24 hours after Miller’s heartfelt comments about how all this losing “defeats […]

Fangio: Not imperative to get Lock into a game this season

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Vic Fangio said Wednesday he doesn’t consider it “vitally important” to get rookie quarterback Drew Lock some playing time this season. With that, he shot down a talking point so popular on Denver’s airwaves that the Broncos need to see Lock play this season to know what they have in the […]

Vikings' win over Broncos is their first without a running game

Photo credit: Carlos Gonzalez, Star Tribune Welcome to our morning-after Vikings blog, where we'll revisit every game by looking at three players who stood out, three concerns for the team, three trends to watch and one big question. Here we go: In two losses to the Bears last year — arguably the two games that most defined their disappointing season — the Vikings' frustrations mounted particularly around their inability to run the ball against Vic Fangio's defense. Fangio is now the Broncos' he...

With Allen, Broncos offense has the gambles Flacco craved

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — That’s exactly what Joe Flacco was begging for from his play caller: Bravado. Aggression. Risks. Trickery. Only, Brandon Allen was the direct beneficiary, not Flacco. Rich Scangarello busted out all the elements expected of him when Broncos coach Vic Fangio plucked him off Kyle Shanahan’s staff in San Francisco to modernize […]

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos have placed quarterback Joe Flacco on injured reserve and promoted rookie QB Brett Rypien from their practice squad to back up new starter Brandon Allen. Curious calls doom Bears, Broncos to last-second losses

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Vic Fangio’s new and old teams were done in over the weekend and curious, conservative calls were the culprit. In Chicago, the Bears lost 17-16 to the Los Angeles Chargers when Eddy Pineiro missed a 41-yard field goal as time expired after coach Matt Nagy had quarterback Mitchell Trubisky take a […]

Broncos QB Flacco to miss game with herniated disk in neck

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Broncos quarterback Joe Flacco, who ripped Denver’s coaches for their play-calling in their last-minute loss at Indianapolis, won’t play next week because of a herniated disk in his neck. Coach Vic Fangio said backup Brandon Allen will start Sunday when the Broncos (2-6) host the Cleveland Browns (2-5). Fangio said he’ll […]

Broncos’ DeMarcus Walker living up to his billing in Year 3

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Broncos pass rusher who has flourished the most in first-year coach Vic Fangio’s defense isn’t star linebacker Von Miller but backup defensive end DeMarcus Walker . While Miller fights his way through the longest slump of his career, Walker, a third-year pro from Florida State, is finally living up to […]

Chiefs-Broncos Preview

Keeping Patrick Mahomes on the sideline has worked wonders for Kansas City's opponents, providing a blueprint for the Broncos on Thursday night as they seek their first win over the Chiefs in four years. Every game has its own personality,'' cautioned Broncos coach Vic Fangio . Every team also builds its own reputation, and the Chiefs (4-2) have a dud of a defense to go along with that firecracker offense.

Fangio has found the right mix on Denver’s defense

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Vic Fangio has settled on the right mix to restore Denver’s defensive dominance even without pass rusher Bradley Chubb and cornerback Bryce Callahan. Kareem Jackson fits right in at safety for Broncos

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Exhibit No. 1 in support of Vic Fangio’s desire to convert Kareem Jackson into a fulltime strong safety is the 10th-year pro’s jackhammering, fumble-causing, touchdown-saving, touchback-inducing, bone-crunching hit of Chargers running back Austin Ekeler . On fourth-and-goal from the 1 and with 7 seconds remaining in the half, Ekeler lined up […]

Broncos-Chargers Preview: Joe Flacco, Philip Rivers In Veteran QB Battle

(CBS Denver) — The Denver Broncos have stumbled to an 0-4 start to the season. Despite new quarterback Joe Flacco, the two-back running attack of Phillip Lindsay and Royce Freeman and a serviceable defense, the Broncos can’t seem to find the win column. Two of their losses were decided by a two-point margin. Had those last-second field goals not occurred, the conversation surrounding this team would sound very different. Peyton Manning: Vic Fangio will bring solid, fundamental football to Broncos

Peyton Manning didn't take a job in the Monday Night Football booth this offseason, but he was willing to engage in a little analysis during a visit to the Broncos facility on Thursday. Manning's history with new head coach Vic Fangio dates back to when Fangio was on the Saints staff and Manning's father Archie was working as a broadcaster for the team. He faced a Panthers defense run by Fangio in his rookie season and then practiced against him for three years when Fangio became ...

Broncos cornerback De'Vante Bausby told to pick it up by Vic Fangio

A strong showing in the AAF with the San Antonio Commanders led the Denver Broncos to sign cornerback De'Vante Bausby earlier this offseason after the short-lived league went defunct. Broncos head coach Vic Fangio has familiarity with Bausby as well as he played under Fangio for parts of two seasons in 2015 and 2016 while Fangio was the Bears defensive coordinator. But that familiarity didn't keep Fangio from delivering a verbal kick-to-the-backside to Bausby on Monday.

Joe Flacco won't have to worry about losing his job to another rookie quite yet

After the Denver Broncos selected Drew Lock in the second round of the 2019 NFL draft, Joe Flacco likely had flashbacks to one year earlier when his Baltimore Ravens drafted his eventual replacement, Lamar Jackson. The good news for Flacco is that this time around, he should have a bit more breathing room. First-year Broncos head coach Vic Fangio spoke to the media on Sunday and quashed any rumors of a quarterback battle during OTAs.
