12 rangers among 17 killed in attack in DR Congo's Virunga park

At least 17 people, including 12 rangers were killed on Friday in an attack in Virunga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site in the restive east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, an official said. It said that civilians were the apparent target of the attack. Virunga is a UNESCO-listed site which is spread over 7,800 square kilometres (3,000 square miles) over the borders of DR Congo, Rwanda and Uganda.

At least 18 people, including 12 rangers were killed on Friday in an attack in Virunga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site in the restive east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, a park spokesman said. Virunga National Park has fallen on hard times recently, and its tourism industry is taking a big hit as a result. Last month, two British tourists were kidnapped, their guide killed, and driver injured, leading the park to close itself to all tourism indefinitely (the tourists were safely released). Virunga Park closes to tourists

Last Friday (May 11th), two British tourists and their driver were abducted in Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The park ranger who accompanied them, Rachel Masika Baraka, aged 25, was shot to death in the attack. Two British tourists and a third person — the driver of the convoy the group was a part of — were kidnapped on May 11th inside Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
