Ever hit a pothole and want the city to pay for the damage?

Q. Dear Honk: Last week I was cruisin’ north on Vista Del Mar in the El Segundo/Playa del Rey area in my classic ’57 Chevy convertible. In the No. 1 lane there is a GIANT pothole. Of course I hit it with my left-front tire, causing damage. I haven’t yet gotten an estimate on fixing it. But it will cost, probably, $400 to $500. Can I contact the county/city and make them pay for this damage? – Dave Kingsley, Torrance A. With all of the various taxes Southern Californians face, you would certainly...

Neither the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health nor the county Office of Emergency Management immediately returned requests for comment Saturday. But on Friday, Barbara Ferrer, the county’s top public health official, sa...

Sheehan Adopt-a-Family Project sponsors computer lab for foster kids

For the past 35 years the Sheehan Adopt-a-Family Project has provided holiday gifts to dozens of needy kids and families in the Los Angeles area each year. But sometimes a gift is not enough. Founder Melissa Sheehan-Clarkson, who runs Melissa’s Mutt Hutt — a dog walking and pet sitting company — said although the experience through the foundation brought joy to those who could least afford a holiday, she wanted to do more. “While giving them gifts is wonderful and kind and helpful, it doesn’t re...

Incineration of psychiatric hospital highlights gaping need for more beds in Southern California

By Barbara Feder Ostrov, California Healthline As fire raged in Ventura, Gracie Hartman made her way to the county fairgrounds to look for her friend, Fernando. She found him there at the evacuation center, among 69 patients from the Vista del Mar acute psychiatric hospital, one of two such facilities in the county. They had been removed with little time to spare as the hospital was overtaken by flames. Over the next couple of days, Fernando was transferred to one general hospital as a stopgap, ...

Dangerous ‘road diets’ are starving LA of common sense: Susan Shelley

If there were a Museum of Stupid Ideas, you would have to walk the stairs to the upper level because, in keeping with the theme of the place, the elevator would not go all the way to the top. If there were such a museum, an entire wing would surely be devoted to the idea of “road diets.” The premise behind “road diets” is this: Where traffic is heavy and there are a lot of accidents, traffic lanes should be removed. That will slow everybody down and create a sense of “community.” Does it ever. I...

Two years have passed since 16-year-old Naomi Larsen was “fatally struck by a taxicab near Dockweiler State Beach” while “crossing Vista Del Mar with her friends,” but now her family has been granted some closure. Just last Wednesday, the Los Angeles City Council agreed to pay $9.5 million to settle a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the teenager’s parents, Stacey Larsen and Steven Potovsky, who “argued that the death of their daughter was a “foreseeable tragedy” because the city had failed to en...
