A new smartphone brand called iQoo made its debut on Weibo, China’s answer to Twitter, on Tuesday by greeting in English: “Hello, this is iQoo.” It also playfully encouraged people to guess how its name is pronounced, as the spelling doesn’t resonate with e...

Apple's iPhone sales in China collapsed last quarter, and it's because they cost too much (AAPL)

iPhone shipments in China dropped nearly 20% on an annual basis during the 4th quarter of 2018, according to a new estimate. Huawei shipments were up 23% during the same period, according to the report.  Apple's high iPhone prices hurt it in China, according to IDC, a market research firm.  Apple missed its own revenue target during the quarter by about $7 billion, and attributed the miss to slow demand in China.  Apple's iPhone shipments during the quarter ending December 2018 were down near...

China’s smartphone shipments dropped 14 percent in 2018

Smartphone numbers are down all over — but things look especially stark in China these days. Tim Cook cited softened demand in the world’s largest smartphone market as a key factor in its lowered guidance, and Apple is far from alone in feeling the pinch. Today, Canalys reported another large drop in the country for 2018. The firm says that shipments dropped 14 percent in China for the year. That’s the second year in a row shipments have dropped, following more than half-a-decade of impressi...

Chinese smartphone brand Oppo is the fifth biggest phone maker in the world and has outsmarted Apple in China and India. Oppo is largely unknown in the West, but it has teased an official UK launch on January 29. It's part of a family of other massive smartphone brands such as Vivo and OnePlus. Oppo will find it tough to break into the UK market, but does have a reputation for adding cool new features to its smartphones. Apple might be the defining smartphone company in the West, but there's ...

Two Chinese smartphone makers most people in the US have never heard of are innovating faster than any other company — even Apple and Samsung

Vivo and Meizu, two Chinese companies you may not have heard of, revealed smartphone concepts that don't have any ports or buttons.  Instead, they're using newer technologies to replace these things, all while keeping the familiar smartphone design. Meanwhile, other smartphone makers are sticking to more traditional technologies, which now look outdated in comparison to Vivo and Meizu's concepts.  In 2016, Apple's Phil Schiller infamously said that the company removed the headphone jack from ...

Review: The Vivo Nex 2’s bet on dual displays somehow paid off

Chinese phone brand Vivo didn’t wait even six months after launching its first bezel-less phone to unveil its sequel at the end of November last year. While the first Nex came with a pop-up selfie camera to allow for a front fascia free of notches and other components, the Nex Dual Display Edition (which I like to call the Nex 2) got even crazier with a second screen on the rear panel. That allows for a bezel-less display, as well as for better selfies and video calls because you’re not forced t...

No buttons, no ports, the all-glass Vivo Apex 2019 is the purest smartphone ever built

A triumph of minimalism, the Vivo Apex 2019 concept phone is, in many ways, what the iPhone should have become. Pure and pristine in every sense, and made completely from glass (something Apple even patented in 2014) with no trims or embellishments, barring the cameras, the Vivo Apex 2019 is quite literally flawless. It ditches the buttons and the ports (completely functional details, if you think about it) and puts aesthetics on a pedestal. Obviously, this raises a few questions… like how do yo...

Smartphones are about to get more interesting, but is it enough to drive growth?

Smartphone numbers are down. In 2018, global shipments dropped 3 percent, and while the long-promised arrival of 5G will help numbers get back into the black, IDC predicts that even then growth will be in the low-single digits. With a few exceptions, handset makers are starting to feel the pain of stagnation, due to a confluence of different forces. There’s slowed economic growth in China and internationally, prolonged upgrade cycles and price hikes as tariffs are levied amid a looming trade...

The World Isn't Ready For Port-Less Phones (Yet)

Slowly but surely, ports have been falling off our devices, and as a preview of our fully wireless future, Meizu and Vivo recently released seamless phones with nary an opening. But despite how slick those devices appear, (and my personal desire to banish wires to the shadow realm), the world simply isn’t ready for…Read more...

Another port-free phone emerges

In the future everything will be a screen. Glasses, hats, shoes, windows. You’ll turn on the faucet and bath in screens. Sure, most of us have, at best, a love-hate relationship with the things, but we’ll probably never be able to quit them. The Apex 2019 is Chinese smartphone maker Vivo’s latest bid to go all-in on all-screen. In fact, the concept phone ditches the front-facing camera altogether, rather that the pop-up method the company has previous shown off. As I’ve noted, I wouldn’t be ...
