Polestar “will have to question everything” in order to build the first climate-neutral EV

Polestar, the Swedish electric vehicle brand spun out of Volvo Car Group, set on Wednesday a “moonshot goal” of creating the first climate neutral car by 2030. But instead of getting there through more widely-practiced offsetting measures, such as planting trees, the company said it’s going to fundamentally change the way the new EV is made. That means rethinking every piece of the supply chain, from materials sourcing through to manufacturing, and even by making the vehicle more energy efficien...

Polestar unveils its all-electric response to the Tesla Model 3

Volvo’s standalone electric performance brand Polestar introduced Wednesday its first all-electric vehicle — a five-door fastback that is gunning for the Tesla Model 3. In the past few years, every time an electric vehicle — concept, prototype, or production version — has been unveiled, the term “Tesla killer” has been tossed about regardless of whether that car will ever even come to market. In the case of Polestar 2, it’s unclear if it will be the “Tesla killer.” It’s possible that an entir...

Tesla Woes Create Opening for Rival Auto Innovations

Volvo has unveiled its Tesla competitor—the Polestar, designed to compete with the Tesla Model 3—just as Tesla has reportedly laid off hundreds of workers. In fact, reports in recent days not only reveal firings but that it’s building some of its new cars by  hand and can’t figure out how best to spot-weld steel in manufacturing its new Model 3, above. You might attribute these wobbles to the creative destruction you can expect when one of the world’s most brilliant business innovators, with El...

Volvo XC40 Targets Urban Dwellers, City Commuters

( = || []).push({}); Volvo’s upcoming new SUV, the XC40, aims at staying in the premium segment while it heads downward, size-wise. SUVs, for all their functionality and popularity, have some hitches in their armor, especially when it comes to in-city usage. Size is obviously what I’m talking about here. Have you ever seen a Hummer in a crowded, downtown environment? Of course you have. Don’t be that guy. Seriously. But that’s where the latest batch of sm...
