Rai Benjamin leads record-shattering day at Mt. SAC re-opening

WALNUT >> Rai Benjamin, the World Championships 400-meter hurdles runner-up, recently caught up on Zoom with the man who dominated the event for parts of three decades, Edwin Moses. “Just talking shop,” Benjamin said of the conversation with the two-time Olympic champion. Moses gave Benjamin a few pointers the former USC NCAA champion put to good use at the USATF Golden Games at Mt. SAC’s Hilmer Lodge Stadium Sunday. Benjamin, in his first 400 hurdles race since the 2019 Worlds, was clocked in a...

Comment on takeout-style sesame noodles with cucumber by Kathryn

In reply to Laura. Thanks for your suggestion, it worked well. Walnut also worked well, as did light olive. Depends on the vegetables used. Also less related- I’ve started using cashew butter or cashews ground at home in place of sesame tahini. It’s mild, sweet, not the same, but a very acceptable sub. Husband and kids like it too.

Notebook: Arcadia baseball postpones games due to covid protocols; Azusa football coach resigns

The Arcadia high school baseball team postponed last Friday’s Pacific League game against Burroughs due to covid protocols and will remain in quarantine until at least April 26, according to Arcadia athletic director Milicia Protic. The Apaches had a busy week planned with two Pacific League games against Glendale, and big non-league games against Servite and Sierra Canyon, all of which have been postponed. Protic said the Apaches hope to make up all the games, especially the league games and sa...

Let’s talk about gaslighting and fundraising

“Most of the startups I give advice to about how to raise venture capital shouldn’t be raising venture capital,” an investor recently told me. While the idea that every startup isn’t venture-backable might run counter to the narrative to the barrage of funding news each week, I think it’s important to double click on the topic. Plus, it keeps coming up, off the record, on phone calls with investors! As venture grows as an asset class, the access to capital has broadened from a dollar perspective...

Creator economy’s slow burn

Hello and welcome back to Equity, TechCrunch’s venture capital-focused podcast, where we unpack the numbers behind the headlines. Natasha and Danny and  and Grace were all here to chat through the week’s rigamarole of news. Alex took some well-deserved time off, but that meant we got to poke a little fun at him and create a Special Edition segment to start off the show. Jokes aside, this week was yet another spree of creator economy, edtech, and new fund announcements, with fresh and unexpe...

Walnut wants to crack open flexibility for healthcare bills

Healthcare insurance, if you’re lucky to have it, only covers a subset of conditions in the United States. As a result, patients can often get burdened with horror story charges, like huge deductibles, out-of-network costs and expensive co-pays. So for the uninsured and insured alike, innovative ways of managing big bills are in high demand — especially as uncertainty remains around how COVID-19 and long-haul symptoms will be handled by patients and payers. Walnut, founded by Roshan Patel, is a...

LOS ANGELES — A Southern California brother-and-sister team were arrested Tuesday on federal charges alleging they orchestrated a $6 million real estate fraud scam in which they listed homes without the owners’ consent and collected money from multiple would-be buyers for each of the not-for-sale homes. Adolfo Schoneke, 43, of Torrance, and Bianca Gonzalez, also known as Blanca Schoneke, 38, of Walnut, each pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a nine-count indictment unsealed after their arrests. If co...

Vegan Winter Squash Walnut Bars

Not just for Halloween or Thanksgiving, winter squash or pumpkins offer many nutritious meals and treats over the winter months. We enjoy growing red kuri squash and usually harvest enough in October to carry us over until April with good meals. These squash and walnut bars are a great treat. They are easy to make and quick. The original recipe called for sweetened condensed milk, but we found vanilla soy yogurt had the right taste and texture to use as an alternative. We hope you enjoy these al...

LA county election switch boosts voter turnout: See what happened in your city

LOS ANGELES — Average voter turnout tripled in 35 cities in Los Angeles County following a 2015 state law that mandated local elections be moved to days of national or state elections if a city’s voter turnout was 25% or lower than the previous four statewide elections, according to a study released Monday. The report, released by the nonprofit California Common Cause, examined elections between 2012 and 2020, finding that 54 California cities that moved from off-cycle elections in 2016, 2018 an...

Why this new examination of trees is worth its weight in gold

24 karat gold. It is the measure designated for pure gold. But where does it come from? Ironically, it is derived from the seeds of a carob tree (Ceratonia siliqua), an arboreal species that you could hardly call glittery or glitzy. Carob tree flowers are drab and barely noticeable, and since the carob is an evergreen species, its leaves do not change color. As noted by Max Adams, author of “Trees of Life” (Princeton University Press, 2021), “Twenty-four carob seeds came to be the standard weigh...
