Venice Emerges from Quarantine - And it is Divine

Venetian Cat sunbathing on the Grand Canal at Rialto - Photo: Cat Bauer (Venice, Italy) As Venice yawns, stretches and blinks her way into the sunlight, slowly coming out of quarantine, contrasting stories emerge -- a bit like the parable of the Blind Men and the Elephant. One individual's version of reality can depend on which part of town they see, and who they talk to -- if you go here, you will see the elephant's tusk. If you go there, you will see the trunk. Or the knee. Or the ear. ...

Kitchen of the Week: A ‘Frankensteined’ Historic House in Philadelphia’s Fishtown, Before and After

It was a gray waxed canvas tote that first caught my eye thanks to its leather strap made from a World War II gun sling. That was at a trade show several years ago, where Margaux and Walter Kent of Peg and Awl were also showcasing wooden bath trays, “apothecary cabinets”, and rope tree swings, all of which looked as if they had been created by nostalgists with very good taste. “Our work is made from old things found and recovered from misfortune and neglect,” they explain. “When the old eludes u...

Each Wednesday we tell you which three English-language cases and which French-language case have been the most viewed* on CanLII and we give you a small sense of what the cases are about. For this last week: 1. Wilcox v Alberta, 2020 ABCA 104 (CanLII) [44] The foregoing suggests that there is an important difference between an initial placement in a given facility (often stemming from a security classification) and placing an inmate in solitary confinement within that facility. Today in Baseball History: Shea Stadium gets greenlighted

On March 16, 1961 — 59 years ago today — the state of New York approved a bond issue for the construction of a 55,000-seat stadium on the site of the 1939-40 World's Fair in Queens, in an area called Flushing Meadows. It was the same site that the city offered Walter O'Malley and the Brooklyn Dodgers to build a new stadium in an effort to keep them from moving the west coast a few years before. William Shea was a lawyer.

Exclusive ‘Disappearance at Clifton Hill’ Clip: David Cronenberg Has a Podcast

Albert Shin ’s Disappearance At Clifton Hill is a curious Canadian case of kidnapping, repressed memories, and the maddening effects of Niagra Falls. IFC Midnight nabbed distribution rights after positive reactions came out of last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, praising the film’s nu-noir aesthetic. I’ve yet to watch it myself, but an earlier trailer paints an underbelly small-town vibe as one woman attempts to make sense of questions from her childhood. The answers, I can o...
