Court Tosses Devin Nunes' Silly SLAPP Lawsuit Against CNN (techdirt)

As you may recall, Rep. Devin Nunes has spent the last few years suing all sorts of critics and journalists, in a vexatious bout of abusing the courts to try to stifle criticism. Most famously, Nunes sued a satirical cow on Twitter (that case is still ongoing). But in December of 2019 he sued CNN. As we noted at the time -- despite a weird column by a media critic at the Washington Post saying that this case was "halfway decent" -- the case seemed like the dumbest Nunes' suit we'd seen so far. ...

Douglas Turner Ward, Pioneering Black Theater Artist, Dead At 90

A writer and director as well as an actor, he wrote a 1966 New York Times Op-Ed titled “American Theater: For Whites Only?” that inspired the Ford Foundation to fund the creation of the Negro Ensemble Company, with Ward as artistic director. Both he and the troupe amassed nominations and awards, and the NEC counts some of the world’s most admired Black actors as alumni. Ward was also a playwright, and just last year published his magnum opus, a trilogy titled The Haitian Chronicles. – The New Yo...

'The clouds cleared': what terminal lucidity teaches us about life, death and dementia

Just before Alex Godfrey’s grandmother died from dementia, she snapped back to lucidity and regaled him with stories of her youth. Could moments like this teach us more about the workings of the brain? It was the red jelly that did it. It was Christmas 1999 in Rapid City, South Dakota, and Ward Porterfield, 83, was in a nursing home. He had been diagnosed with dementia three years earlier; he was confused and disoriented and eventually he no longer recognised his daughter, Kay. “When I went in,” ...

Angels’ Jared Walsh won’t be pitching, but Taylor Ward will continue to catch

With only pitchers and catchers participating in the official workouts so far in Angels camp, it’s worth noting that Taylor Ward is there and Jared Walsh isn’t. Although Ward is listed as an outfielder, the Angels are continuing to have him get some reps at catcher, which was his position when he was drafted. Walsh is listed as a two-way player, but Manager Joe Maddon said there has been no discussion about him pitching. Walsh now projects to get most of the starts at first base. Walsh, 27, had ...

For Crying Out for a Remedy

Lawyers tend to get excited when the courts create a new tort, and for good reason. The judiciary is reluctant to instigate such reform to the common law absent compelling facts, and a strong societal need for them to do so. In Seneca College v. Bhadauria, the Court of Appeal found that a cause of action existed for the tort of discrimination, on the basis that the Ontario Human Rights Code, 18 I regard the preamble to the Code as evidencing what is now, and probably has been for some consid...

Angels pitchers and catchers are scheduled to have their first workout of spring training on Feb. 17. As we count down to the opening of camp, we’re doing a breakdown of the different position groups on their roster. Today, a look at the outfielders. Previously: catchers. 2020 RECAP Even Mike Trout wasn’t quite Mike Trout in 2020, as he slumped all the way to fifth in the AL MVP voting, which was incredibly his worst finish. Carta’s startup liquidity service CartaX conducts first transactions on its own cap table

As startups have stayed private longer and liquidity has become harder to secure for early employees and investors, more and more shareholders have looked for ways to unload their shares to others. All the way back in 2011, companies like SecondMarket were seeing nine-figures’ worth of shares being traded on their secondary share platforms. That wave of liquidity startups ran into two problems: One was regulatory, and the other was a lack of company information about cap tables and that company’...

"When I was in college and I was 17 and 18, I was sexually abused by a doctor who was at the University of Michigan who’s currently publicly under investigation," said Ward, later confirming Dr. Anderson's identity. "Listen, I was married 20 years and my ex-wife did not know that, not an ounce of that. But you come to a place of realizing that when you finally let go of these things and when you share with people, whether you deem them embarrassing, whether you can’t come to grips with ...
