California beer drinkers will get their first taste of New York’s Brooklyn Brewery: Here’s the deal

You can get a pint of Brooklyn Brewery’s flagship lager in Australia, Belgium, France, Brazil and Japan. Or in Kentucky, Ohio or Texas. Despite exporting thousands of barrels of beer worldwide, you couldn’t get even a can or bottle of this celebrated brew in our craft beer-loving state until now. “I’m very excited to come to California. Literally for 30 years we’ve had distributors and ex-New Yorkers hounding us like, ‘Why aren’t you in California? I had your beer in Paris, in Tokyo. Why can’t I...

Starlings, of course. When out with the dogs in winter, we often see large flocks of starlings, often with cowbirds and blackbirds mixed in, winging down to settle on cut-over corn fields and soy rakes, huddled on the lee side of shed roofs, and even settling on roads in order to make use of the warmth radiating up from the black tarmac.Believe it or not, the more than 200 million European Starlings found in North America today are direct descendents of approximately 100 b...

A small business, on the other hand, is your local mom-and-pop store with one or two part-time employees not very knowledgeable on the products the store features. Larger companies generally have ...

Alice Darr and Kevin Gavin

Guitarist Mundell Lowe was a wonderful arranger with impeccable taste and intimate elegance. This was true of his big-band writing and those for small groups. Recently I posted on his Columbia albums for Joe Mooney (1963), his TV Action Jazz albums (1959), the score for Satan in High Heels (1961), Jerri Winters Again (1962) and J.J. Johnson's Broadway Express (1965). Two more beautiful examples of Mundy's touch were albums for singers in 1962—Alice Darr's I Only Know How to Cry and Kevin Gavin'...

L.A.’s earthquake early warning system can save lives, but what about the rest of California?

With considerable fanfare, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti started the year by trumpeting a cellphone app that will instantly notify users in Los Angeles County when an earthquake of 5.0 or bigger begins to hit. The pilot program, officially unveiled Jan. 3, can provide crucial seconds — even dozens of seconds — for people to duck and cover or otherwise take potentially lifesaving actions. Dubbed ShakeAlertLA, it’s the first earthquake early warning system of its type in the country. But that al...

The huge annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is wrapping up today, and it seems for the second year in a row smart devices with voice assistants like Amazon’s Alexa and Google’s Assistant were the talk of the show… pun intended.  With Amazon recently announcing they’ve sold over 100 million Echo devices, and analyst estimates saying Google has sold about half that amount of Google Home devices, it’s easy to see that we’re getting quite used to interacting with smart devices.  But in order of...

Travel: No ship of fools for these cruise performers

Garry Carson has heard it thousands of times from cruise passengers before showtime: “I don’t like magic, but let’s see if the guy is any good.” Some entertainers would have bruised egos overhearing such comments, especially on a crowded elevator ride to the deck of the theater. But after 500-plus cruises over 22 years, the seafaring magician knows the life of taking an act on the road where there are no roads. “These people aren’t there because they love or even like magic,” said Carson, pointi...
