How Hate Groups Abuse The Tax Code To Fund Their Activities

This article is part of TPM Cafe, TPM’s home for opinion and news analysis.  The cacophony of radical right-wing violence that reverberated within the communities of Charlottesville, El Paso and Pittsburgh recently resulted in a long overdue decision by the Department of Homeland Security to treat white supremacy as a domestic terrorism threat. While DHS’ rhetorical shift is useful, it is now time for the government and private sector to counter the finances that help fuel white supremacists’ vi...

The worrying ideology that helps Trump’s new friendship with Brazil

As the conflict develops in Venezuela between the US-backed Juan Guaidó and the incumbent government of Nicolás Maduro, one staunch supporter of the United States position is Brazil. Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro has also expressed support for Trump’s wall project, and for moving embassies to Jerusalem. This new friendship between the United States and Brazil is one of the few foreign-policy achievements of the Trump administration, which has generally seemed better at losing old friends tha...

‘Put them all in a gas chamber,’ said Border militia member, 'go back to Hitler days' — Report

“Why are we just apprehending them (…) not lining them up and shooting them? We have to go back to Hitler days and put them all in a gas chamber.” • Remember that US-Mexico border white supremacist terrorist group that published videos of members detaining hundreds migrants at gunpoint, with the Border Patrol's apparent tacit consent? Today, we learn that one member of that racist New Mexico border militia told police that another fellow member once said, “Why are we...not lining them up and ...

King: I Have ‘Better Insight’ Into How Jesus Felt When Crucified After Committee Boot

Fresh off the Easter weekend, Rep. Steve King (R-IA) was feeling a little spiritually vindicated on Tuesday during a scarcely attended town hall in Cherokee, Iowa. After referring to his comments to the New York Times — in which he questioned when white supremacy became offensive — as “misquoted” and the “equivalent of a political lynch mob,” King suggested that he and Jesus Christ have a little something in common. A constituent who identified herself as a pastor told King that she felt Chri...

'Confederate' militia detains migrants at gunpoint — with Border Patrol's tacit OK, they claim

“A right-wing militia group operating in southern New Mexico has begun stopping groups of migrant families and detaining them at gunpoint before handing them over to Border Patrol agents, raising tension over the tactics of armed vigilantes along the border between the United States and Mexico,” writes Simon Romero at the New York Times. They post videos to Youtube of themselves abusing migrants. Here is one such video. We knew the armed volunteer mobs would do this. We knew Trump's in...

Todd ‘Legitimate Rape’ Akin’s PAC Gave Steve King $2K After Racist Remark

A few weeks after Rep. Steve King (R-IA) told The New York Times he didn’t understand why white supremacy was “offensive,” former Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO), infamous for his comments that rape victims can’t actually get pregnant, donated $2,000 to King’s campaign. The leadership PAC run by Akin, Takin Back America PAC, filed the donation on Feb. 2 — according to records — just 23 days after the Times published King’s racist remark, which earned him a bipartisan boot from his committee assignments...

‘Hateful comments’ result in YouTube disabling chat during a livestreamed hearing on hate

At today’s House Judiciary hearing addressing “Hate Crimes and the Rise of White Nationalism,” hate appears to have prevailed. As the hearing’s livestream aired on the House Judiciary’s YouTube channel, comments in the live chat accompanying the stream were so inflammatory that YouTube actually disabled the chat feature mid-hearing. Many of those comments were anti-semitic in nature. Hate speech has no place on YouTube. We’ve invested heavily in teams and technology dedicated to removing h...

Trump to armed border agents: “If judges give you trouble, say, 'Sorry, judge, I can't do it.'”

President Donald Trump today instructed federal agents to break the law. “If judges give you trouble,” the President instructed the armed men, “Say, 'Sorry, judge, I can't do it.'” The news hits just as a related breaking news story crosses the wires: “Judge blocks Trump administration policy of returning asylum seekers to Mexico but won't immediately put order in place.” Trump doesn't like those judges. 'Privileged,' Utah Jazz star Kyle Korver's powerful essay on race in the NBA and America

What an incredibly powerful piece of writing from Utah Jazz basketball player Kyle Korver on playing in the NBA, on coming to understand his own racial justice blind spots, and -- beautifully -- the difference between guilt and responsibility. Excerpt from 'Privileged' at theplayerstribune.com: Two concepts that I’ve been thinking about a lot lately are guilt and responsibility. When it comes to racism in America, I think that guilt and responsibility tend to be seen as more or less the same t...

It Still Takes Almost No Effort to Find White Nationalists on Facebook

Pledge: I will not participate in any event organized by or including institutions that employ Kirstjen Nielsen

Kirstjen Nielsen was Trump's DHS Secretary, where she oversaw the performatively cruel practice of separating thousands of children from their parents, in a calculatedly shambolic and chaotic way, ensuring that many of them will never be reunited with their families. Nielsen covered up this practice by repeatedly lying about it, delaying public action. Now, Nielsen has resigned her position, and it's likely that she will be recruited to a think tank, university center, or similar instituti...

Australia passes law to hold social media companies responsible for “abhorrent violent material”

On Thursday, Australia lawmakers ushered through what is perhaps the toughest legal measures to hold social media companies accountable for the content they share. Only a few weeks after the massacre of 50 people at mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, Australia’s House of Representatives passed a law requiring social media platforms to “expeditiously” remove content that shows kidnapping, murders, rape, or terrorist attacks. If the platforms fail to get rid of the content in a timely fashion e...

NY Man Who Praised New Zealand Shooter On Facebook Arrested On Gun Charges

A New York man who praised the New Zealand mosque shooter was arrested this week for lying to the FBI about possessing a weapon. In an affidavit filed Tuesday, the FBI claims they obtained Facebook records that show Thomas Alonzo Bolin, 22, discussing the white supremacist manifesto that the attacker posted online before opening fire in two Christchurch mosques last month. Bolin allegedly said that something similar should happen in the United States. HuffPost first reported on Bolin’s arrest....

Facebook says this white nationalist video doesn’t break its new white nationalism ban. Huh?

Just as pretty much everyone predicted, one week after Facebook made a big deal of banning white nationalist and white separatist content on its platform.... Facebook now says a viral video on its site which is obviously and explicitly white supremacist and toxic does not break Facebook's new policy. It's explicitly white supremacist content. No, this does not make any sense. Welcome to 2019. “HuffPost showed the company a racist, fear-mongering video by Faith Goldy. Not a problem, a spokespe...

Sting operation: the NRA explains to white nationalist Australian political party how to deflect gun control calls after a massacre

Australian Al Jazeera reporter Rodger Muller infiltrated a meeting between the US National Rifle Association and Australia's far-right/white nationalist party One Nation, where the NRA gave party bosses advice on how to reverse Australia's tough anti-automatic/semi-automatic gun laws (passed after a 1996 mass shooting that killed 35 people) and what to do to deflect public calls for gun control when the next mass shooting happens. In the secret recording, two One Nation officials -- Chief o...
