Will the pandemic spell the end of door-knocking for Jehovah’s Witnesses?

It’s been more than a year now since Jehovah’s Witnesses have gone knocking on people’s doors, and according to representatives for the faith group, even after the coronavirus pandemic ends, they may not resume going door to door — a longstanding tradition and act of perseverance for which the community is widely known. In March 2020, when much of the country went into lockdown to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, the church closed all public meetings at its 13,000 congregations in the U.S....

Housing boom revs up Southern California builders

Southern California homebuilders got the buying-binge memo: Their best sales start to a year in 13 years comes as building permits hit a 14-year high. The pandemic created a sales frenzy as home seekers grabbed historically low mortgage rates to shop for larger living spaces. This push came as the choices of residences to buy dramatically shrank. DQNews/CoreLogic reports builders closed sales on 5,650 new homes in the first quarter in the six-county region — the fastest-selling pace for that per...

Brief heat wave is on the way to Southern California

Enjoy the brisk weather while it lasts, if that is your thing – a heat wave is coming later this week and bringing temperatures in the high 80s to low 90s to much of Southern California. Starting Thursday, according to the National Weather Service, the remnants of a cold front that brought cool temperatures and very light rain to some areas will give way to a ridge of high atmospheric pressure. Clouds will move out, leading to lots of sunshine. And the high winds coming from over the ocean the l...

Court rules Torrance can recoup underpaid utility taxes, but can it collect?

Southern California Edison improperly billed customers in Torrance, depriving the South Bay’s largest city – and potentially dozens of others in Southern California – of revenue from special taxes on utility companies, a state appeals court has ruled. Hundreds of millions of dollars could be at stake statewide as well, the attorney representing Torrance said, with 104 cities and counties having similar voter-approved taxes that utilities across California may have also incorrectly calculated. Hoornstra: After a long year, baseball is a spectator sport again

OK. Pandemic joke. Two fans walked into a baseball stadium in 2020. They took their place in the front row of the outfield bleachers. The first batter of the game slugged a pitch over the fence for a home run. The ball hit the first fan in the shoulder and bounced away, out of both fans’ reach. “Look, I know you wanted to sit close to the action today,” the second fan said to the first, “but maybe you’re not cut out for these seats.” It’s been a long year. The coping mechanisms – Dad jokes, Zoom...

‘Not throwin’ away her shot!’ Whittier doctor parodies Hamilton to encourage vaccination

After a devastating year, a Whittier-area doctor wants to see everyone get vaccinated against the coronavirus — and she’s delivering the message with a pandemic-themed parody of Broadway’s “Hamilton” posted on YouTube. Armed with a selfie stick and her phone, Artesia resident Dr. Julie Borba was frustrated with peoples’ behavior during the pandemic, so she sat down to write some lyrics: I’m not throwin’ away my shot Hey yo, I’m not even foolin’ That I’m tired of home schoolin’ And I’m not t...

WWII-era veteran Leo Haggerty dies at 94; revered coach at St. Anthony, La Mirada high schools

Leo Haggerty, a high school football star who’d just led his team to a state championship in Pennsylvania, enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Why would he do that? He was just 18 and needed only one semester to get a high school diploma. But it was just like Haggerty to do what he would call “the right thing and give back,” the same philosophy he followed throughout his life as a legendary football coach at St. Anthony High School in Long Beach and La Mirada High School and as a succ...

Heightened focus on health departments has some LA County cities wanting to create their own

As the coronavirus transformed from nascent oddity to deadly pandemic early last year, a previously obscure government agency rose to newfound prominence: Local health departments. Thousands of frightened people tuned in regularly to hear public health officials discuss the latest developments of the virus and its spread. Those officials offered safety guidelines and blunt warnings. In turn, they became household names. In Los Angeles County, that household name was Public Health Director Barbar...
