The fintech wars continue to heat up with another major exit in the space. The acquisition is dependent on customary closing conditions. Salt Lake City-based Galileo was founded in 2000 by Clay Wilkes and was bootstrapped to profitability over the intervening two decades. UKIAH, Calif. (CBS Local) — A California woman who nurtured a “beautiful succulent” for two years says she had no idea the plant was fake. Caelie Wilkes had been caring for the plant for two years by watering it and leaving it in her kitchen window to get sunlight. “I had a watering plan for it, if someone else tried to water my succulent I would get so defensive because I just wanted to keep good care of it,” she wrote on Facebook. “I absolutely loved my succulent.” Wilkes decided on Friday to ...

'Category Hell:' 6 months after Dorian, where do things stand?

Six months ago, Hurricane Dorian, one of the most destructive storms in recorded history and the worst storm in the history of the Bahamas, turned lives upside down. The Category 5 behemoth wasn't just devastating because of its size, but also its slow-moving nature. The storm sat for nearly two full days over the northern part of the archipelago, moving at a glacial speed of 1.3 mph. All the while, it thrashed the islands with its extraordinary force. Dorian funneled a devastating storm surg...

Whicker: The enormity of UCLA’s basketball task gets more obvious in a loss to North Carolina

LAS VEGAS — It was a battle of tattered scrapbooks, with hallowed uniforms worn by hollow teams. North Carolina had lost four successive games for the first time in 10 seasons and was outside the Top 25 for the first time in 106 weeks. UCLA was trying yet another start-over with new coach Mike Cronin and a bunch of misaligned parts. The unranked teams were predictably rank, with 39 turnovers and 21 missed free throws. In the end North Carolina figured out how to fit a basketball into the cylinde...

Galileo Financial raises $77 million for its fintech services that were 19 years in the making

Clay Wilkes had already been retired for six years when he launched Galileo Financial Services in 2000. Now the company runs the backend integratio...

LOS ANGELES — Cameras clicked as Mick Cronin tried to turn his ceremonial UCLA jersey around. The new men’s basketball head coach didn’t want to display his last name printed on the back. “The four letters are more important than my name,” Cronin said. Jury Rejects Harry Reid Suit That Claims Exercise Band Blinded Him In One Eye

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A jury in Las Vegas flatly rejected former U.S. Sen. Harry Reid’s lawsuit against an exercise band maker he blamed for injuries — including blindness in one eye — he suffered when the stretchy device slipped from his grasp and he fell face-first a little more than four years ago. After eight days of testimony, the eight-member civil trial jury deliberated about an hour before declaring that Reid never proved the first of 10 questions they were asked to decide: that the device...

UCLA falls to Arizona State in Pac-12 Tournament quarterfinals

LAS VEGAS — UCLA’s turbulent basketball season, which included the program’s first midseason coaching change, likely came to an end Thursday evening, an anticlimactic finish in a half-empty arena. The seventh-seeded Bruins lost to second-seeded Arizona State 83-72 in the quarterfinals of the Pac-12 Tournament after trailing by double-digits for much of the second half. LOS ANGELES — Murry Bartow slapped the back of his right hand into the palm of his left. “Fun-da-men-tals,” UCLA’s interim head coach emphasized with each beat. UCLA is 20 games into the season, but Bartow knows he still needs to stress the fundamentals with his young team that is in danger of falling behind in the conference race.
