'Carlton Dance' Too Simple To Copyright says Copyright Office

In a setback in actor and dance innovator Alfonso Ribeiro's battle against game creators, the U.S. Copyright Office has ruled that his “Carlton Dance” cannot be copyrighted. According to an email obtained by CBS, the Copyright Office rejected Riberio's copyright for the dance saying that it represented a “simple dance routine” rather than a work of choreography. Ribeiro, who played Will Smith’s sidekick in the ’90s sitcom “Fresh Prince of Bel Air” devised the dance move for the show. ...

Copyright Office Refuses Registration for 'Fresh Prince' Star Alfonso Ribeiro's "Carlton Dance"

The U.S. Copyright Office is skeptical about Fresh Prince of Bel-Air actor Alfonso Ribeiro's ownership claim over the signature "Carlton Dance," which became famous after a 1991 episode of the Will Smith series. From a report: In correspondence last month that was surfaced on Wednesday in California federal court, Saskia Florence, a supervisory registration specialist in the Office's Performing Arts Division, told Ribeiro's attorney that registration must be refused because his claimed "choreogr...

Why Will Smith Turned Down ‘The Matrix’

It’s a well-known piece of film trivia that Will Smith turned down The Matrix. It’s up there on the list of other famous almost-casts: Molly Ringwald could have been in Pretty Woman, Eric Stoltz was Marty McFly for a few weeks of filming. But Smith missing out on the role of Neo in The Matrix always seemed especially tragic considering he turned it down to star in the biggest bomb of his early career, Wild Wild West. “I’m not proud of it,” Smith said of the Western comedy in the latest entry of...

‘Veep’ actor Matt Walsh talks end of HBO series and playing the ‘Beauty’ in a rom-com at a French vineyard

When HBO’s “Veep” went on hiatus, actor Matt Walsh had a chance to swap his role as communications director to Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s Vice President Selina Meyer to play a rumpled romantic lead in a rom-com filmed in France. So off he went. The seventh and final season of “Veep” arrives this spring, having wrapped up shooting in December just before the film “Under The Eiffel Tower” arrived in theaters and digital services this month. “The ride has been tremendous,” Walsh said of the time he’s sp...

‘Aladdin’s New Genie Really Blue Everyone’s Minds

And not in a good way Back in December we got a first look at Genie as played by Will Smith in the upcoming Aladdin remake directed by Guy Ritchie, and obviously people weren’t happy, because nobody’s ever happy. Courtesy of Entertainment Weekly The first round of criticism came as a result of Genie not being blue, which is fair, because that’s part of his iconic look, so I get that. HOWEVER. If you’ll all recall, Genie also did take human form in the original ...

Grammys 2019: Women dominate the award show performances

The 61st Annual Grammy Awards ceremony was dominated by strong female-led performances. From the start with Cuban-American singer-songwriter and former Fifth Harmony member Camila Cabello was on fire with her Grammy nominated-single “Havana” as she was joined by fellow Latin stars Ricky Martin and J Balvin, as well as Young Thug and trumpet player Arturo Sandoval. That along with 15-time Grammy Award-winner and powerhouse R&B singer Alicia Keys hosting, set the tone for the evening. Early on, Ke...

Grammys 2019 fashion sparkles, literally, with bejeweled dresses, jumpsuits and more

Awards shows are known for their flash and glam, but the 61st annual Grammy Awards took it to a literal level at Staples Center in Los Angeles Sunday, Feb. 10. The red carpet was full of sparkling stars wearing shiny dresses, glittering bling and more. (It also had plenty of big hats.) And the glitter didn’t stop once the show started, either, with Lady Gaga wearing a Bowie-esque bedazzled jumpsuit for the performance of “A Star Is Born” power ballad “Shallow.” Mark Ronson, from left, Andrew...

‘Aladdin’ TV Spot Finally Reveals Will Smith as the Big Blue Genie

When the first teaser trailer for Disney’s live-action remake of Aladdin first arrived, fans were fairly underwhelmed. Even when the first images of Will Smith in the movie arrived, he wasn’t blue like the famed genie voiced by Robin Williams in the 1992 animated classic. But that changed t...
