Why college reform will promote racial equality

I was very active politically in the 1960s, 70s, and the early 80s. Life became more difficult in the late 1980s with the arrival of a third child, and as I focused to publish enough to get tenure in a large Midwestern university. Today, as I look back on that time, I struggle with two perspectives about current anti-racist activism and about a continued anti-racist struggle in the academy. One of them is to believe that the current political reckoning over racism in the United States is differe...

Pence Deleted Social Media Posts That Misattributed Swing State PPE Deliveries

The Washington Post has a deep look out today at Project Airbridge, the Trump administration’s effort to quickly airlift huge amounts of PPE from foreign manufacturers into the United States. It’s an informative telling of what’s been a murky, complicated and, as the story convincingly suggests, failed effort to end chronic shortages in protective equipment supply around the country. The Federal Emergency Management Agency maintains a national stockpile for distribution of critical items like...

Series of the Weekend: Minnesota at Wisconsin

Photo by M. Anthony Nesmith/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images Parity continues to grow every year in women’s college hockey. Northeastern, Ohio State, and Cornell have emerged as legitimate Frozen Four contenders, fully capable of pulling off an upset and taking home their first national title. But at least for the time being, the world still revolves around the two Goliaths in the women’s game: Minnesota and Wisconsin. And this weekend at Madison’s LaBahn Arena, they will face-off for the...

Sorry, Ohio St-Michigan, Wisconsin-Minnesota is biggest game

No conference loves a good rivalry more than the Big Ten. There are 17 trophy games recognized by the conference, after all. No trophy is necessary for the biggest rivalry: Ohio State-Michigan is just known as “The Game.” This year, however, Wisconsin-Minnesota takes center stage. The game for Paul Bunyan’s Axe on Saturday in Minneapolis […]

Women’s WCHA Playoff Picture

This coming weekend is the final weekend of the regular season in the women’s WCHA, and while the league standings may have solidified into three distinct tiers, there are some very intriguing battles within those tiers that should make for an exciting final weekend both on the ice, and in watching scoreboards. Here’s how the league standings look, as of today: A couple quick reminders at the beginning. A league win is worth three points in regulation/OT, and two points fo...

Wisconsin, Minnesota primaries to gauge strength of opposition to Trump

Voters were going to the polls in those states for party primaries, and Democrats will have a chance to show they can mobilize voters for Nov. 6’s congressional elections and perhaps the 2020 presidential race as well. Trump was the first Republican presidential candidate to win Wisconsin in 32 years, and he narrowly lost to Democrat Hillary Clinton in Minnesota. Trump’s consistently low approval ratings and his trade policies, however, may have given Democrats renewed life.

funny things non-preppers do to prep

If you all didn"t hear, we've had a little bit of a flooding problem up here in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa. As flooding has slowly become the norm around here it is one of the things that we are prepared for. So, after making sure family, friends and some neighbors were ready, after filling hundreds of sandbags to help those less fortunate, and after some friends came over to stay and help with chore and drinking my wine we settled in for the joys of not being able to leave until the water ...

Damrel & Five Timber Wolves pulled wagon for "CREAM of RYE", Minneapolis Cereal Co, Minnesota, 1912" This is a promotion wagon and card for "Cream of Rye" cereal from 1912.The Minneapolis Cereal Company (now called General Mills) employed "Professor" J.A. Damrel and his team of canids, sometimes listed as "five timber wolves," to go "coast to coast" advertising their product. An Example of Comedy Gold

First, I am not a proponent of UND trying to join the Big Ten Conference in Hockey. I see it thrown around from time-to-time as mere speculation. I am of the mindset that it's a pipe dream of some and just not interesting to me. Not one bit. Outside of UND playing Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan two-to-four times a year, the thought of being a member of the B1G bores me. I wouldn't want to see UND playing MSU or OSU on a regular basis. The games this past year against MSU were at best boring...

As Establishment Flails, Trump Goes in for Kill

The GOP Establishment is in such a state of apoplectic panic over the rogue candidacy of real estate developer Donald J. Trump that on Thursday they sent out its feckless failed nominee Mitt Romney (who four years previous fulsomely praised Trump on jobs and trade) to verbally assassinate the party's own frontrunner. Even more dramatic, should Florida Senator Marco Rubio lose Florida's winner-take-all primary come March 15, some of these insiders are actually urging a vote for Democrat Hillary ...

News Wrap: South Korean ferry captain sentenced for deadly disaster

GWEN IFILL: This was a day of honor for military veterans in America and for many thousands more who served and died in Europe during World War I. That vast conflict began a century ago and ended on this day in 1918 and it served as the backdrop for today’s ceremonies. Under a bright autumn sky, Vice President Biden carried out a time-honored tradition, laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery. With President Obama in Asia, Mr. Biden addressed veterans and their...
