The most underrated American BBQ

No one style defines American barbecue. Ask anyone where to find the country’s definitive barbecue, though, and they’ll likely point you toward the South. Four destinations in the southern United States make up what’s known as the barbecue belt: There’s Texas with its brisket, Memphis with its pork ribs, Kansas City with Missouri’s best burnt ends, and the Carolinas with their competing takes on pulled pork and slathery sauce. Barbecue is a loose concept, however. It typically refers to mea...

Recipes: How to make beer can chicken and other items for your Memorial Day cookout

Chickens are placed atop beer cans to make a backyard grilling classic. (File photo by Ygnacio Nanetti, Orange County Register/SCNG) Grilling is often a key player in Memorial Day celebrations. Even though the health crisis prevents us from hosting large gatherings, the grill can still be the culinary cornerstone of marking the occasion. On daily early-morning walks with my husband, the conversation often spins around to the food. Discussion of beef shortages led my spouse to come up with a b...

Rosemary Ranch Turkey Kabobs

Spring is finally here (no more snow, fingers crossed) and I’m hoping to do all my planting this weekend! It’s a different year for all of us for sure, and the garden centers are emptying out quickly because everyone wants to get outside and plant this year for something to do. We’ve emerged from our isolation cocoons in March and April, along with the much-talked-about Covid-15-pounds from enjoying comfort food while we watched the news. If you, like me, are looking for ways to try and ke...

Comment on tomato-glazed meatloaves with brown butter mashed potatoes by Alice C Wolff

Not to be one of those people who substitutes everything and then leaves a comment but as a former meatball lover who is now a gluten free vegetarian (I know) I wanted to say that I made this a while ago using gluten free sandwich bread, tamari subbed for Worcestershire, and Beyond Meat ground ‘beef’ and it was so, so, so good.

Comment on takeout-style sesame noodles with cucumber by Amanda

This is one of my favorite SK recipes (and that’s saying a lot). I find myself needing to be extra careful about my sodium intake and just tried this, with low sodium Worcestershire sauce instead of soy sauce. the soy sauce version is better, but this comes very close!

Ask Brad: What does a restaurant critic cook during a pandemic?

Q: Hey Brad, what does a food critic cook while sheltering in place?   A: While I still get most of my food from restaurants, I am currently cooking more than usual. I’ve been focusing on things that I can repurpose or freeze and eat again next week — and of course things that don’t require a lot of grocery shopping. So the first thing I made last week was a caesar salad and my famous meatloaf.     Restaurant critic Brad A. Johnson’s meatloaf is inspired by the late Paul Prudhomme, legendary...

Comment on an iceberg wedge with blue cheese by Emily

Made this many times! Buttermilk makes it pourable, but Greek yogurt (nonfat is fine) is perfect for dipping. I usually double the Worcestershire sauce and add a generous pinch of cayenne as well. Hard boiled egg, grilled chicken, and / or avocado can make this a meal. But you already knew that!

Comment on crispy tofu pad thai by Juhi

I always have tamarind paste which I used half of what’s mentioned cuz it’s really tangy! I also used jaggery instead of brown sugar. And Worcestershire sauce instead of fish sauce as I don’t like the flavor or smell of fish sauce. My noodles turned mushy In the pan. In hindsight I should have soaked it for only two mins perhaps (the packet instructed for four mins to cook). I also ended up adding a fair bit of salt in the end. The lemon juice really helps btw! Oh, and heating the pan for two mi...

Elsie’s Homemade Chex Mix Recipe

I make a big batch of homemade Chex mix every year (sometimes twice!) between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. We have a couple different variations, which I’ll explain below. It’s super easy to customize to exactly your taste (notice we leave pretzels and peanuts out; we also left out candy this year because if it’s in there our daughter only wants to eat the candy and nothing else—lol). If you’ve typically purchased pre-made Chex mix at the store and are scratching your head as to WHY this needs t...

The Awkwardest Squad: Why the 96/97 “flippin’ murdered ’em” tour of Zimbabwe was peak 90s England (a net bowler’s story)

England in Zimbabwe 96/97 (via Sky Sports/YouTube) Big thanks to everyone who funds the site through our Patreon campaign. We couldn’t justify spending this much time on a King Cricket article without you. Remember 1996? Things were very different in 1996. Back in 1996 Leonardo Dicaprio from The Revenant and Claire Danes from Homeland seemed like a perfectly reasonable Romeo and Juliet. Back in 1996 Babylon Zoo could get to number one before anyone realised that the catchy ...
