Rain, mud, lucky find and more rain

TuesdayThe rain that threatened yesterday arrived in the middle of the night.Woke to wet ground and overcast skies.  After breakfast at a local cafe, Dan K decided to leave a day early for Moab, can't say I blame him.  The off pavement trails around here, being soaking wet, are not rideable! After Dan left, I decided to try and find the lock which had bounced out of my unsecured top case yesterday afternoon on the trail where I did the test ride after Yagi's suspension work.Did I mention things w...

Ride in the morning, maintenance in the afternoon

Chilly overcast weather today with a threat of rain the whole time we were out riding.Dan K. rode his Ural M70 Solo motorcycle, Rich K. rode his V-Strom 650, Dana W rode his bright red K75 BMW EML Sidecar Rig while Spat and I rode our respective rides from yesterday.  View of Needle Rock with Mt Lamborm enshrouded by rain clouds behind it.  Dana W's lovely EML Rig "No, it's not for sale, I asked" Rich K. led us on a 99% paved route through the area, and though the weather was chilly,...

T-Dubing in Rabbit Valley, Colorado

Enroute to Hotchkiss, CO for a small gathering of Uralisti that starts next week.I setup up camp at the group parking lot for RVs as my usual spot was occupied as I arrived shortly after 9AM.I would end up, finding a better spot about two miles further north from the group parking lot, and have the place to myself with great 4G coverage since you could see the nearby cell tower. Not bad eh?  I-70 is just on the other side of the hills in the background but you can't hear the noise from  the ...

T-Dubing in the Sand Flats Recreation Area

The Sand Flats Recreation Area, the northern entrance of which is located in the city of Moab, provides the local area with camping sites, slick rock and 4x4 Jeep trails and lots of room for hikes and such.I rode there today to do a recon of the campsites and see as to their functionality for future use in terms of space and 4G cellular signal.BLUF:  I only found one campground in the recreation area with decent signal, specifically Juniper 8.  The other campsites I stopped at were for cars and ...

Training on loose sand, experimenting with tire air pressures

Today's primary objective after work was to train/work on riding on loose sand, something that proved quite difficult at times in the last couple of days.  I got to a small stretch leading to the Mill Canyon Trailhead and began trying different air pressure levels. Started off at 13 PSI, not very stable and much use of the "outriggers", my feet dabbing the sand in order to remain upright. Lowered it to 11 PSI on the front and 10 in the rear.  Better handling with some occasional dabbing.  ...

T-Dubing to the Canyonlands National Park

Today was a ride to familiar locations, Shaffer Trail and the sights of Canyonland National Park.  These locations are west of Moab along Utah 313, a nicely paved road with some curvy sections to keep motorcycle riders entertained. Today's sunrise was "OK" For the record, it's almost 12 miles to the Archview RV Campground which is located at the junction of 191 and 313.  From there it's about 24 miles more to Shaffer's Trail so not a long ride.  I would end up filling up Yagi's small tank both...

T-Dubing and Glamping in Moab, Days 1 & 2

Sunday, May 12Drove Umarange, the URRV, towing Yagi, the 2006 Yamaha TW200 (T-Dub) 6 hrs to The Utah border, 7 to Willow Springs road....so shortly after 1700 with 1006 departure.  The thought was to use the same spot as the last time I was here but after I wasted two hours trying to find a free spot that had good signal, had ot give it up.I drove 10 miles back north to North Klondike Bluff and found a site with great signal since right across the highway from cell tower.  Had the site all to my...

More Boondocking - Visiting two other SWAs and Yagi proves some what cargo capable.

A pretty good sunrise today: Today I found myself missing the enormous cargo capacity presented by the sidecar of a Ural rig.I was low on fresh water and some other foodstuff so it was time to head into the somewhat nearby town of Hugo, CO.Using a ratchet strap (which didn't really handle the bumps well) and some bungie cords, I got the water and groceries onto Yagi and we made it home with only some water spilled onto my backside when the jug came loose from the ratchet strap.Yagi did ...

Glamping in the Oil Well Flats BLM Area

Spent Monday and Tuesday glamping at a new site north of Cañon City along Red Canyon Road.  I'd spotted the place during my ride on Shelf Road and decided to try it out.Monday's weather was light rain and solid overcast.  Rode around some but not very scenic area to start with, and definitely no chance for pics when the clouds obscured even the nearby hills! Tuesday, I tried going over to the Shelf Road (about ten miles away) hoping for "in the clouds" shots but nope: Perhaps an hour...

T-Dubing along the Shelf Road from Cripple Creek to Cañon City

Today Yagi and I rode over to Cripple Creek using part of the Gold Belt Tour Road system, using CO9 to CR11 ending up in Cripple Creek where we got onto the Shelf Road aka Teller County 88.But first, some pictures of the sunrise I woke up to, not too shabby: The northern part of the Shelf Road is a bit of a twisty roller coaster, narrow dirt road, steep hills and lots of blind curves with careening cagers speeding their way through the area.  It pays to stay alert.  A lovely view of far...

Riding Yagi on Phantom Canyon Road

Glamping again at the Penrose BLM site. After work, rode over to CO State Highway 67, aka Phantom Canyon Road.  It used to be a railroad route between the town of Florence and Cripple Creek.  Apparently a lot of gold was transported by train back in the day.Nowadays it's a pretty smooth dirt road with two narrow railroad tunnels and one remaining steel bridge (I think it's been restored, looks too good).  Towering, rocky canyon walls  The southern or Lower Tunnel entrance  The nor...

Short Rides

Last ten days or so have been a bit of a strain in the House of Chang.Miles, aka Thing 2, was finally diagnosed with a severe case of Mononucleosis and much time was spent in different emergency rooms and urgent care facilities over the last couple of months before that was determined.Good news is, all other much more worrisome causes have been eliminated, it's definitely Mono. In between visits to medical facilities, I worked in some short rides. April 7...clear views of nearby peaks  Mount ...

Trying out Yagi on Rocky Trails

Yagi, Japanese for Goat....I named the 2006 Yamaha TW200 thus in the hopes that she'd be as surefooted as a Mountain Goat on the trails I like to explore.Bottom line: She sure is!Drove Umarang, the URRV to the BLM area called Penrose Commons, near Penrose, CO on Sunday March 24.  I parked it at the main parking area which was too full of weekenders for my liking.I proved the advantage of the Pitbull Trailer Restraint System I'd installed previously and Yagi came off the trailer, easy peasy.  I r...

In the last few days....

Over the last few days, I've been puttering in the garage as the weather is quite cold.Rides have been short but did manage to get a ride in for each motorcycle in the garage:  Fiona and Mount Evans Brigitta at the Westlands Park entrance  Yagi at Sunset Speaking of Yagi, I'd noticed the battery she came with didn't seem to hold a charge for long.  The records I got from the previous owner showed it was less than 3 years old too.  Some reading online at the TW200 forum showed th...

Yagi's first sunset with me and another update on Scarlett

Yesterday evening, I rode Yagi the 2006 Yamaha TW200 Dual Sport over to my usual Sunset picture spot. The clouds cooperated somewhat, Yagi does silhouette nicely doesn't she? This evening, Yagi and I rode out again for the sunset but it was not to be....clouds rolled in and completely blocked the sun. What to do, what to do? Instead,  I spent perhaps 30 minutes riding in the dirt trails in the vacant lot next to the sunset picturing spot.  Not a large area but several trails full of r...

Introducing: Yagi, the 2006 Yamaha TW200 and a Scarlett Update

Yagi: Japanese for Goat. The Yamaha TW200 Dual Sport Motorcycles have apparently garnered a reputation for go-anywhere little motorcycles, not very fast (in fact I think a Ural is faster if you can believe that!), good reliability and easy to service. So the name Yagi pretty much came to mind after some debate.I'm thinking Yagi will allow me to continue riding those back trails and forest roads I so like to explore and perhaps even summit some of the mountain passes that have defeated my Urals...
