Get Used To Seeing The Name Tai Verdes

The concept behind the MTV reality show Are You The One is as follows: Twenty-two young singles are matched into ideal couplings using dating software, then must work to identify their perfect matches while living together. If each algorithmically ordained couple successfully identifies each other, the whole group gets to split a million dollars — so, sort of a dystopian remix of familiar MTV concepts like The Real World and Next. In season six, filmed in New Orleans in 2017, the contestants wer...

Years & Years – “Crave”

It’s been a little over three years since the last Years & Years album, Palo Santo. Not that Olly Alexander hasn’t been plenty busy in recent times — covering Lady Gaga and Lil Nas X, performing Pet Shop Boys’ “It’s A Sin” with Elton John, starring in the HBO show of the same name, and releasing standlone tracks like “Starstruck.” Along the way, he’s also finished a new Years & Years album. It’s called Night Call, and it’s out at the very beginning of next year.

‘Years & Years’ Trailer: Emma Thompson is a Divisive Politician in HBO’s Dystopian Drama

A powerful political leader who stokes anti-immigrant fears and weaponizes an increasingly polarized community? Where have we heard that before? Years & Years may be a new HBO limited series that depicts a dystopian near-future in which Emma Thompson plays a charming and controversial government leader who threatens to tear Britain apart, but it feels alarmingly relevant to today’s political landscape. The limited series even begins in 2019, before venturing decades into the future to examine w...

Pop Radio’s Love Affair With White Rappers Continues Apace

"Let You Down" begins with plaintive minor-key piano chords and a trembling vocal run through that omnipresent chipmunk effect, the wildly popular pitched-up modulation that makes the human voice sound slightly alien. The singer intones, "All these voices in my head get loud/ I wish that I could shut them out/ I'm sorry that I … More »

Absolut Lollapalooza! A full-blown Festival Experience

The Lollapalooza festival had its second Berlin edition this past weekend and it was quite spectacular. I hadn’t been to the one last year in Tempelhof, but this year there were a few acts that I didn’t want to miss so I took Absolut up on their invitation to join them, and I’m so glad I did. This was probably the biggest festival I have ever been to (I admit I haven’t been to that many) and being surrounded by that many celebrating people is quite the thrill. Especially at the two main stages t...

Hey you! Out there in the cold, getting lonely, getting old: Everything you grew up on is classic rock now. 12 Groundbreaking Music Videos By Gay Artists

Even before the days of MTV, artists have been rocking the needle forward for LGBT visibility with groundbreaking music videos showing the beauty of our lives, loves, and perseverance. It’s a tradition that continues today, and while we’re thankful to have an army of allies who have used their art to stand with us in solidarity over the years, there is no substitute for the feeling that comes from seeing our stories told by members of our own community. As we near the end of LGBT Pride month, w...

We’re Going To Have To Live With Meghan Trainor Forever, Aren’t We?

"All About That Bass" had one-hit wonder written all over it. The sound, concept, and visual aesthetic were all gimmicky as hell, and even though they were effective gimmicks, they didn't seem like the mark of an artist who was built to last. When the track was becoming an endlessly dominant #1 hit, I … More »

The 2016 State Of Pop Address

The US president's annual State Of The Union address is always a loaded subject because no one can agree exactly what state the union is in or why it's in that state, especially in such a polarized, compromised, altogether monumentally fucked political environment. We can't even agree on who should be considered a part of … More »
