Plugging Into the Third Mind

The Third Mind closes with a tribute to Roky Erickson and the 13th Story Elevators' dark classic "Reverberation". This cover feels like the most straightforward track on the album, coming across like a particularly sprightly (and Edgy) U2 tune with a dash of hair metal thrown in the mix. On paper that might sound horrific but scraping away a bit of the original's psychedelia reveals "Reverberation" to be a terrific rock tune, and there's nothing wrong with that. That's the cool thing about The...

Stream: Mapache, ‘Life on Fire’

Mapache — the Echo Park duo of Sam Blasucci and Clay Finch — have been playing music together since their days at La Cañada High School. They make everything sound easy-schmeezy, from the way they mix California country, psych-rock and Latin music to their preternatural harmonies. The music on their 2017 self-titled album seemed to drift down a canyon like tendrils of smoke on a lazy summer evening. The duo today announced that their sophomore effort “From Liberty Street” (named for their Echo P...

'Tis the Season...for Christmas Music (Music Notes) (OT)

Nick Lowe Christmas, also known as "Songs-You're-Sick-Of Season," is nearly here. If you're looking for some good Christmas music, may I once again recommend my favorite Christmas album, Nick Lowe's 2013 Quality Street. Actually it's not a "favorite," it's the only Christmas album I like. Nick is an Englishman, born in Surrey. Sixty-nine now, he figured in power pop and New Wave in the UK back in the day. He was a producer for artists like Graham Parker, and he wrote the Elvis Costello hit ...

Stream: Eleni Mandell, ‘Empty Locket’

Singer-songwriter Eleni Mandell has (too long) been an undervalued Los Angeles treasure, a true product of L.A. who grew up in the scene here and who, over 10 full-length albums, remains resolutely unbeholden to genre constraints. Or tidy pigeonholing by blogs, for that matter. Suffice to say her work has spanned rock, pop of all shades, jazz, folk and country, her tunes floating wherever the fickle breezes of songwriting carry them. So it is fitting, though tardy, that Mandell is getting her du...

Watch Exclusive Premiere of Chatham County Line's Video 'All That's Left'

I first had the pleasure of hearing Chatham County Line play live at MerleFest a few years ago and then again in the summer of 2015 at The Steel Wheel's Red Wing Roots Music Festival. What initially drew me to this Raleigh, North Carolina-based quartet is that in addition to the unique mix of bluegrass, folk and Americana tunes they harmonize so beautifully on is the fact that they typically crowd around a single, large, silver radio microphone. And that's not the band's only nod to the past. M...

Trail Mix: Three from the Triangle

The Triangle region of North Carolina is known for producing bands that successfully mess with various styles of roots music. Chapel Hill’s Southern Culture on the Skids has been filling venues for more than three decades with an irreverent brand of hillbilly rock. Squirrel Nut Zippers was a huge part of the rowdy swing revival of the late 90s, and Ryan Adams got his first notice in the Raleigh-bred, pioneering alt-country act Whiskeytown. This fall three steadfast bands from the area that carry...

So it’s the time of the season, when I get into that reflective mood and begin working my way backwards over the year’s music, books, movies, etc.  And 2015 was equally as rich as 2014 was, so I thought I’d share some of what I feel are the highest of nearly-innumerable high points over these last twelve months.  I acquired quite a lot of music – some purchased, some sent for review; I saw as many shows as my schedule would allow and read as much as my free time would give – which, of course, ...
