We went shopping for electronics at Best Buy and Sears, and it's clear which store does it better (BBY, SHLD)

Best Buy and Sears both sell appliances and electronics like TVs, smart-home devices, and speaker systems.  If Sears were to close all of its stores, Best Buy would be in a good position to capture sales, analysts say, because of the overlap in the products the stores sell.  We visited both stores and found that besides the size of the electronics departments, Best Buy offered better prices, higher-quality products, and a better shopping experience overall. It's no secret that Sears' busines...

Before there was a Tucker 48, there was a Tucker Torpedo. The boldly styled coupe, shaped by designer George Lawson, never progressed beyond a quarter-scale model, but that hasn’t stopped Rob Ida, his father Bob, and Sean Tucker, great-grandson of Preston Tucker, from building a full-size version. On October 4, the under-construction Tucker Torped...

Day Care Done Right

There's a Catch-22 for low income families when it comes to day care. Two incomes are essential for any quality of life and that means finding affordable day care. Like most parents, families with limited resources want the best for their children. The state and federal government has made subsidies available. But according to the Center for American Progress: "Only about 22 percent of children in low-income families currently receive federally subsidized child care, and while preschool enr...

Brittany and beyond: Joanne Harris's family holidays in western France

The award-winning author of Chocolat, and ardent Francophile, recalls childhood summers spent among the châteaux, cobbled towns and coastal retreats of western FranceThroughout my childhood, I always spent my holidays at my grandfather’s house. He lived in Vitré, in Ille-et-Vilaine, Brittany but he had a tiny cottage on the island of Noirmoutier, where we would spend the summer. These visits were always a time of celebration, bringing together the members of my mother’s family that we only saw o...

2016 in Review: My Year in Movies and TV

At the start of 2016 I decided to make an effort to watch more movies, as I’d more or less lost the habit in recent years. The intention was to watch one movie a week; when I look at my Letterboxd diary I see that in reality I didn’t even quite manage one every fortnight — but still, that’s over twenty movies I probably wouldn’t have watched otherwise. It was worth doing, and I intend to keep up the effort in 2017.In January I started making my way through this Indiewire list of the best women...

Sexy infrastructure and other notable developments in 2016

Judging by the heaps of praise for projects, including Governors Island in New York City, Chicago's Navy Pier, the Lower Rainier Vista at the University of Washington in Seattle, and plans for Dallas' hugely ambitious 10,000-acre nature district, infrastructure is sexy. Moreover, these projects are evidence that landscape architects continue to grow as a leading force in shaping our cities, dealing with complex environmental issues and the locus of exceptional design. Populous, Multi-Racial And Ignored: Latinos And Police Shootings

The police officer who shot and killed Philando Castille in Minnesota, Jeronimo Yanez, was Latino. That shooting added to the narrative of yet another white officer killing a black man. Karma and You

The Big White continues apace, and even though this week has been nothing short of a train wreck time wise, I’m still on track, though my ability to stay that way feels fragile. Row 39 accomplished, seven rows (and that long cast off) to go, and seven (or eight) days to go until shawl deadline. One thing I can say with certainty at this point – I’m not going to run out of yarn or beads. There’s tons of both, so there’s one layer of worry I can take off this. Row 38 took a long time, with three ...
