Review: Hulu’s ‘High Fidelity’ Is a Cool Cover, but It Misses Some Notes

Zoë Kravitz is great in this gender-flipped version of the book and film, but the show itself offers only superficial pleasures.

WIS, WWA | I am complaining about the clouds

Hello, frugal people! It’s been kind of dreary and rainy here, and I’m feeling a little bummed out from all the clouds. Here’s hoping for some sunshine soon! Zoe and I DID get to see our very plump friend at the cat rescue center, though, and she is kind of like sunshine. What I Spent.Brought to you by: Frugal Focus

Five Frugal Things | More mending + I was firmly assertive

I fixed Zoe’s chokers. She bought a set that turned out to be terribly flimsy; they kept breaking after just a few wears. Luckily, I was able to get them back together with a pair of needlenose pliers. How long will the repair last? I dunno. But at least she’ll get a little more wear out of them! I resubmitted a medical bill.Brought to you by: Frugal Focus

‘The Magicians’ Delivers One of the Most Heartbreaking Moments of the Entire Series in “The Mountain of Ghosts”

Grief is a lonely thing—something deeply painful and personal that can’t be fully shared with anyone, even if you’ve both loved and lost the same person. But even if grief can’t be completely shared and understood by another, it can be helpful to mourn with others. Alice and Eliot are the two characters on The  Magicians  who are suffering the most from losing Quentin. They both were in love with him, after all. And they are also the two who feel responsible for his death.  Before this episo...

How cruising may look in 2030

Imagine coming back from a hard day of working with baby sea turtles on a tropical island, stepping aboard a cruise ship where the A/C in your room is already set to cool you off, there’s a big fruity drink waiting for you on the nightstand, and a perfectly heated shower is already running. The sound system is playing a soft steel drum band, and the lights automatically set to complement the sunset. You shower, then head to dinner where your dream meal is waiting without you having to order. ...

US man confesses to killing family and pet dog in Disney-built community

A man has confessed to killing his wife, three children and the family dog in a community built by Disney World and close to the corporation's famous Florida theme parks, police said Thursday. Anthony Todt, a 44-year-old physiotherapist, confessed to killing his wife Megan, 42, and his children Alex, Tyler and Zoe, aged 13, 11 and four. Five Frugal Things | with a hat tip to Katy!

I sold a drawer pull for $12. I bought a nightstand for Zoe on Facebook marketplace for $25, painted it (a before and after post is coming), put on a new handle from my stash, and listed the other one on eBay. It took a few months, but someone bought it for $12, which is almost half the price I paid for the nightstand in the first place.Brought to you by: Frugal Focus

Dracula (2020) – review

Director: Jonny Campbell, Paul McGuigan and Damon Thomas First aired: 2020 Contains spoilers So, the pre-amble. I was sorely vexed over how to review this but am afraid to say there will have to be spoilers aplenty (including cliffhangers and twists), for two reasons. Firstly, what the creative minds of Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat have given us are essentially three films. Each episode was 90-minutes and each self-contained (though interconnected) with three distinct story parts. The issue wi...

Biggest radio industry stories of 2019 on RadioToday

More has happened in the UK radio industry during the last 12 months than any other 12 month period in the last 15 years, based on the number of stories, reaction and visitors at RadioToday. The year 2019 has seen it all – major consolidation – major brand networking – major radio talent moving, and sadly some radio greats have left us. Our stories are industry focussed so are based on the views by radio people rather the general public. Radio stories that also appear on mainstream sites get ...

‘My Zoe’: Film Review

There are two films in Julie Delpy’s ambitious, sharply-made but unbalanced “My Zoe.” There’s the scabrous relationship melodrama, about bitter exes sharing custody of a beloved child, which contains the story’s most potent emotions. And there’s the sci-fi-inflected ethical-dilemma grief movie, which houses its most provocative ideas. Both have much to recommend them, not least […]

Artist playlist: KOLARS look back at the last decade (and beyond) in L.A.

Long before he was making spaced-out rock ’n’ blues with his wife Lauren Brown as KOLARS, Rob Kolar was a fixture on the L.A. scene as part of the bands He’s My Brother She’s My Sister and, before that, Lemon Sun. So he’s seen a lot of bands come and go, or come and stay, or come and morph into other bands. As we reach the end of the decade, KOLARS looks over the shoulder at some of their favorites — in the form of the playlist “L.A. Local Flavor: Favorites From the Last Decade (and Beyond).” At...

25 Out-of-Print Books That Were Used Bestsellers in 2019

Floodland by Marcus Sedgwick Marcus Sedgwick’s debut novel from 2000 is bizarrely out-of-print. This fantasy story, aimed at young adults, imagines a future where England is covered by water and the city of Norwich is now an island. Zoe has been left behind and struggles to survive amid the chaos. This piece of environmental fiction doesn’t look so fictional today.
